what do i need on my computer to record?

Hi there, i am very new to recording. I am 16 and i have a group of friends who have a band, We are looking to record a record, in traveling around to recording studios, the first thing we have found is it is expensive! we have school so ther goes a chance at makign enogh money for going to the movies, nevermind recording.
Now i am a computer geek, i work for an internet service provider and can build and have everything running on a computer in an hour. I have an older pc, a pentium pro 200, which i can upgrade as much as I need. What will i need for a processor, sound card, other cards, and programs to record? I will be recording 2 guitars, a bass, drums and 2 vocals. My concerns are money, and i do not know what the external problems are, am i suposed to record all at once? or am i supposed to record one instument at a time? and when recording vocals i will probubly pick up some guitar, so i need help please. Thanks in advance for your help.

Pooge, you have come to the right place. A lot of questions can be answered by going to the home page and looking around a little. A FAQ's page is being worked on that should answer a lot of questions like yours, but briefly, its probably cheaper to go the "record one instrument at a time" route. With some shareware multitrack recording software and an $89 soundcard like Sound Blaster Live and a couple of Shure 58 Mics (about $80 each) and a good quality mic pre- amplifier you can get pretty far. Just take a listen to some of the members posts at the MP3 clinic forum. Some of them have only this much.

On the computer side of things a big fast hard drive and about 128meg of memory helps but its not essential. The 200 pent pro should be enough to get you going. There is all kinds of information on this site. Just hang out and you will be up and running in no time.

I'VE BEEN TRYING TO SELL THIS SOUND CARD BUT NO LUCK SO FAR. IVE REDUCED THE PRICE TO 160.00. ITS A 20 BIT CARD, 4 INPUTS AND 4 OUT PUTS.ITS MADE BY MIDIMAN. THE DMAN 2044. ITS A GOOD CARD AND ITS BRAND NEW. ONLY USED TWICE. WOULD WORK GREAT FOR WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO. PAID 250.00 FOR IT. ITS BEEN LAYING AROUND IN THE BOX IN OUR CONTROL ROOM AND WE HAVE NO USE FOR IT SINCE WE GOT OUR MOTU GEAR. JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW.
