Things u should get:

1)Max out your PC ram, consider a 2nd HD for audio,or partion your one HD.

2)Sequncing program (do a search)

3)An audio interface- lots of them out there (pci, usb and firewire-different makers- different sizes) (do a search)

4) Midi interface - some audio interfaces have this included (do a search)

5)Midi Controller- Usually piano style keyboard, or drum style pads to contol midi data. (do a search)

6)Montiors (speaker type) Even though U have loud speakers, you'd benefit from hearing what your music really sounds like. (do a search)

Although i love the feel of them you dont NEED an drum machine. For one it will eat up a big portion of your budget if you're looking to get one the hip hop favorites like an MPC. I'm a fan of NI Battery. As a matter of fact NI has a package called Komplete 2 which would give you pretty much their entier softsynth catalog for a bout $500.

Since u already have the PC that $2000 should give you a nice start. Keep in mind what you ultimately want to be able to do. That will help you decide how many ins and outs you will need and give your set up room for growth rather than buying twice.

I didn't mention anything in reguard to recording vocals as i didn't get the impression of that being what you were looking for. But even if you dont' now, plan as though you may want to later.

Good Luck

There is also much good info in the DJ/hiphop/beats section on this forum. Not really my thing but lots of people with lots of experience & knowledge.

Well if your recording hip-hop then I suggest looking into the OG of them all drummachines the akai MPC, but I have gotten great results with akai of course, but also reason, Acid pro 4.0. Maybe I read you post too fast but I don't really know if hip-hop is what your doing, please enlighten me?

what these guys recommended is great: Native Instruments makes IMHO the best soft synths ever and there's no better place to get your hands dirty than with an MPC.

I myself use a software program called "Propellerhead's Reason", it's all I ever need as far as sequencing grooves....It's set up like a hardware interface and I find that really intuitive.

You'll also need a Two-track audio editor, I'd go with Sony Sound Forge.

here's a PC sample set up for you with your budget of $2000
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sound card/midi interface: e-mu 1820 $400

Beatmaking/sequencer software: Reason 2.5 (full of drum machines, synths, loopmaking materials, effects, you name it!) $400

Sound editor: Sony Sound Forge 7 $350

midi controller: check out the Evolution mk series, about $150 or so

now if you're recording audio (vocals, guitar) then I would suggest buying a couple good all-round microphones like the SM57 or the Sennheiser 421 (both dynamic) or a Rhode NT (condesor), and you'll also want to get a multi-track recording program such as cubase or sonar. I've heard good things about Samplitude lately :)

now, take all the extra money you have and stock up on RAM, storage devices, and anything that will make your system run better..

of course, this is just "recommendations" of what to do. There's plenty of great products out there, you should download some demos.

good luck!

Adam
