I have hours of minidisc recordings of synth crap that I want to import into my laptop, edit out mistakes, mix levels, and put drums and other layers over top. I would also like to record live with my keyboard (maybe someday I'll try midi but too overwhelmed and confused right now). I ordered an M-audio 9900 sound card for my inputs, upgraded to 512 mb RAM, and an 80 gig hard drive. I have Reason 3.0 on my laptop now.

Basically, I need to know what the best software is for what I've described above. I don't think that Reason is what I was looking for. Are there plug ins that can acheive this with Reason or maybe just return it and go with something more suited for what I want?

Thanks for any help!!

I know this may sound redundant, but you need to get a program that handles MIDI.
A whole heckuva lot easier to edit MIDI than audio, and it's really not hard to learn at all.Take it from me a guitar player.

Also I did a search of M-audio 9900 and that's not a distinct model number, rather it seems a generic catalog prefix that encompasses a wide range of audio and MIDI interfaces.

I wouldn't buy an expensive software program based on things you already recorded, rather based on things you want to record. You'll find your mini discs to be an archaic toy once you find out what software will do.

I'm sorry if I didn't directly answer your question, rather I'm trying to give you good advice.

Yeah but...

Sorry here is that model number M-AUDIO 9900-40727-00.

So I don't need Reason and I should give up on my old minidisc recordings and any hope for live recording directly into some software for editting? I see what your saying but I don't like it. Start over and just learn Reason and get with it... That sounds like work. Anyone else have anything better to tell me?

I quite smoking and I'd rather die a slow painful death!

Well first off if the editing is not too serious most programs should handle it.
Did you play along to some kind of beat or metronome? That would make it a lot easier to get what you want done.
If you just played freestyle...good luck. :(

Second when you look for a program, see if it's compatible with Reason.I'm not familiar with Reason,is it rewire r something like that?

Third when you say edit and correct mistakes,do you mean pitch correction, that's a seperate program from sequencer/recorder software, although Sonar5($$$) Producer edition includes a plugin that will do this.

Fourth,I would reccommend a program that includes MIDI in case you want to add tracks.I know you don't want to hear this, and it's real hard to explain over the internet, but if someone gave you fifteen minutes worth of time on a MIDI equipped rig,you would never look back.

I'm a hardcore Cakewalk user and I think all their products are great, but here's a freebie you could try,but I'm not to sure about it's editing abilities...

Let us know what your budget is and maybe we could nail down something more specific.

Also once you do get going you should use your digital connections for the file transfer to the computer.
