I am trying to buy my son a Digital workstation like the Roland 890, well I simply can't afford it! A friend recommended that I come to this web site for what he says is "Expert" advise!

Can you guys give me my alternatives to the Roland 890 and why? I can only afford $600.00 US. Which means I will probably end up spending more, but what the hell, I think he's worth it! I just can't afford to make a mistake!! I am open to all suggestions including used equipment.

Statistics, He is 16, thinks Jimi Hendrix is the best, along with the "Who", "Guns & Roses", etc. He plays an American Strat, Line6 Flextone, Line6 Floor board, Line6 Distortion box.
I got him a Philips 775 CDR for Christmas, but we havn't used it yet. I would like to use it in conjunction with the digital workstation.

I would certaintly appreciate any help you guys could give, I have no expertise in this area.
Sincerely, Windy

does this $600 include mics? do you have any mics? are you only going to be recording guitar, no drums or vocals?

The $600.00 does not include mics, which I don't have yet. Currently we will just be recording the guitar.

Im having a hard time not pointing you towards a computer setup. With any digital multitrack in that price range you will most likely be limited to the number of tracks you can record at once probably 2-4, and also total tracks, most likely 8. I think the Delta 44 soundcard would best suit your needs. you can get it for $200 if you look around, that saves you $400 off the bat. Its A/D converters are definitely better then ANY of the $600 multitracks, and it leaves A LOT of room for expanding.

So I say go for a soundcard as long as you have a computer that can handle it.

I'm leaning the same way as kristian but a few questions...will he every be recording more than 1 instrument at a time (as in a band)....does the system have to be portable....does he have access to a computer you would let him do this on, and if so what processor, cpu speed, and amount of ram do u have.....will he be doing vocals.....
