What did I do wrong?

This is my first recorded song ever that's about finished. (One of the emo-core songs I posted earlier, now with vocals.) I spent about 12 hours this weekend, trying to get the vocals right. But just couldn't get them right.

They are recorded with a C3000b directly into my VS1880. Room has no acoustical treatement, but could be alot worse. The vocal style really needs a compressor before going to digital, but I don't have one yet. (So half the vocal is recorded at a way too low level, to prevent clipping.) But I'll get a voicechannel soon.
So, what's the prob here?

There's also something wrong with the guitars. Dunno. They lack the in-your-faceness they should have. They are recorded using the cab-simulated out of Marshall JMP1's, so that could be the reason.

Other remarks? Give me the full load. (I used to play in the band 2 years ago. They are doing fine without me. hehe. Darn.)

I must say that I liked the drums.

I did not like the unprocessed sound of the vox. I think that it should have had a nice reverb on it.

I quite like the balance of the instuments, except that the vox was too low. The vox also needed air.

THe guitars were VERY far away. A bit thin. I would have liked them a little more uprfront with a nice hall reverb or maybe a small garage.

Good song. The pres on the 1880 are not bad at all.

There is reverb on the vox... Not enough, apparently. The strange thing is, when listening at the club (right after opening, no people there), there was to much reverb! But that club has a very wide stereo image. Speakers on both sides. And it sounds awfull. If it sounds good over there, you did very well.

Everything sounds good over there, except for the vox... Really messed up. How do I give 'em more air? The highs are allready up? (I might try to track 'em again, there's plops on another song anyway. And by the time I just might have a symetrix 528. )

Guitars more upfront with reverb might be good idea. Try it in the weekend. I might try overdubbing the guitars too. It really is a demo so the guys could see if the songs work (they do... ), but I really want to get it right. Good songs, fun to work on, and alot to learn...

I like it a lot, but the lead track needs some major compression (severe ratio (1:6 i'd guess at least) and a very high threshold)
A different reverb. Not a lot of it, just a little, but a more ambient one, with a darker, warmer sound.

Roel, don't pull the trigger just yet hey I like this kind of stuff, I thought the guitars bass and drums were sounding pretty damn good to my ears. I had these 20/20's cranked hard too. Would like to hear it when you do a re-take on the vox, they don't seem to sit just right in the mix. Good stuff man...David
