hello-

so I have this beautiful clean stereo file in Cakewalk, clear, excellent sound on my Yorkville monitors, have it in its own project file, and I Export to Wave. 24 bit. Fine, there it is, I see it as a Winamp media file. I don't listen to the Winamp yet...

Then I convert it to an MP3 for posting

Then, I listen to the MP3 in Winamp and there's Hiss like an old cassette tape.!

Then I listen to the Wave file itself in Winamp and there's the same insane hiss, mostly in quieter parts.

I only dithered when converting it to MP3.

There's some huge thing I'm missing here I know it. I couldn't even find the question asked by anyone in my searches. Is it Winamp? There must be something... all the stuff I listen to on Winamp is usually fine.

any help would be appreciated

thanks

Have you tried dithering to 16 bit before converting to MP3?

hi-thanks

I did that when I checked the Cakewalk stuff which said to convert it to 16 bit to make an MP3. So in Options in the stereo file I checked "apply dither" before pulling up the DB Poweramp converter.

I'm most worried about implications for making a CD copy. I want it to be clean and quiet like my Cakewalk file !

Can dither/not dither make that much noise?

I know theres alot of reading on this board about Dither, but I couldn't find anything to fit my exact situation

thanks

one idea/question:

I had a real-time effect on when the conversion to wave was done (without dithering)

Is this a cause of the noise.? Its just a tiny pinch of Cakewalk compression on the thing.

should I "apply effect" before converting it to Wave or anything else?

I can't get to my home computer and this question is killin me

thanks

hey

hey, I'm like a crazy person talking to myself...

I got back to my computer and tried burning a CD from the apparently crappy Wave file, the one that sounded so bad in Winamp. Result- beautiful clean perfect awesome sound. This was my main concern, and its fine now.

then I tried the wave file playing through the Windows media player, instead of Winamp and the result was equally perfect, great clean sound. DammmWINAMP ! I also tried playing the MP3 in Windows Media- perfect !

WINAMP ! I thought that was the best ??

WINAMP was the problem. (Unless my Winamp isn't working right.)

Now I just need to suggest people play it through Windows Media instead of Winamp!

I developed a new confusion about Dither however,
I'll read up, or else come back with another question.

thanks

I think you should re-install Winamp. I have more problems with WMP and Winamp...

If you figure it out, be sure to post. My winamp does the same thing.

hey-

I have not figured this out yet.

actually now that I'm satisfied with Windows media , for my purposes, I don't plan on putting much time on it. Maybe re-install and thats about it
