What Compression settings can i try, to get "Morning View Sessions" vocal leveling

Here's my signal processing chain:

Mic --> Preamp --> PC@Post ---> Limiter ---> Compressor ---> Noise Gate


Let's say my loudest parts don't go above -6 db, what can i try on compression?


Also, any advice on Limiter settings and Noise gate setting, would be useful too.

well, my english is a little bad, sorry.


the vocal compression on this sessions, confuse me a lot.
I mean,... there's sections where brandon is whispering, and then yelling like a maniac, and you can't feel the sound leveling at all.

I've tried a lot to get closer ( in compression ) not in ( sound quality ) of course. But no luck.

it's probably based much more on good mic technique than it is on compression. he pulls back when he sings loudly and gets close when he whispers.

Without knowing how they tracked and edited that stuff, it's impossible to give relaible compresion settings. Wht kind of mic used, how they punched edits, the performer's vocal technique, signal chain, and recording levels during tracking are all unknown variables that affect the answer.

If a whisper sounds the same as a wail, chances are either those were done in different takes and edited together, or level and effects automation were used to process the whisper differently than the wail, or both.

Ok, that does change things a bit. But it doesn't change the fact that asking for a universal compression setting is like asking "how far is up?"; it's a meaningless question.

And it most likely doesn't change the fact that there was probably proper vocal technique in the performance bolstered by full post-production work on the tracks before they got to the DVD, and that there was probably automation involved in that.

I'm not going to pay attention to this sentence, because is obvious you haven't seen incubus performing.

Boyd it's a complete maniac with the mic, no matter the event, and he's not a super singer.

Anyway.... i just asked for some suggestions on settings, to get a little bit closer to that type of compression.
But don't worry, i'll find my way.

You asked how to set your compressor. This is an unanswerable question. The sooner that is learned, the sooner one can get to the sound they desire.

I'm not going to pay attention to this sentence, because is obvious you haven't seen incubus performing.

I can only assume based upon that sentence that you have never actually been involved in the production of a live recording and are completly uninterested in how it actually works.

There is no such thing as a static compression or limiter setting - or even signal chain - that will by itself do what you are describing. And even if there were, the settings for that gear would apply only to that singer with that mic and that level of performance, and would have close to zero meaning in your studio with your gear and with your performers.

I'm not trying to be a prick here. I'm just laying it out that asking for compression settings for anything is ultimately a waste of time, because it's different for every recorded track. There are generalities that can be discussed, but nothing more.

Don't jump all over the the messenger because you don't like the news he only delivers.

I completely disagree. I think Brandon Boyd is an amazing singer. And from the live performances I've seen (which include all of their DVDs and twice from the front row) he displays excellent mic technique.
