I'm planning to buy a new guitar and I play punk and jazz. I'm looking to spend less than $600. what guitar would be suitable for me that could play both styles? thanks..
Ibanez also makes the "artists" line. They are very versitile. I couldn't find a price, yet I would doubt that it would be anything over $600. You could also try the Epiphone Les Paul (very nice).
I don't think the Ibanez is available from where I'm buying from. Suppose I buy the epiphone. What amp should I buy? I play in a jazz band that has 5 trumpets, 2 trombones, 5 saxes, plus vocals, bass, keyboard and drums. What kind of wattage would I need so the guitar can be heard? Any amps in particular that I should try?
You may want to look at some hollow bodies with humbubkers on it. They have a great jazz sound and with a good tube amp, you can get excellent crunch and sustain with them. One big advantage is you can control the feedback with them and get some really awsome sounds.
I have a line 6 pod if it matters. The amp I'm using now is a Fender champ (30 watts i think). It's owned by my school. If I decide to buy a bigger amp for gigging, could the pod change the sound of the marshall and make it better suited for jazz? If I buy a 15 watt practice amp, which one would be better considering that I also practice punk?
You should just go to a guitar store and play some stuff and see what you like. Jazz guys usually play clean. Marshalls are not known for their clean sound, and the cheap Marshalls are sold mostly because of their name and not what they sound like. In my experience, a Pod isn't going to be able to make a bad clean channel sound good clean. But get what you like. Listen to some jazz guys that you're into and go the guitar store and see what you can do. Punk is probably easier since once you find a good clean amp, you can throw your Pod in the mix and distrort the bejezus out of it.
