my colleage and I are building a studio and i was wondering what kind of ceiling is best for a live room?A regular flat ceiling -- or a ceiling that goes into a peak /\ ?we are in a three peice band and play rock.

id say an odd shaped ceiling like and offset triangle. like have one side longer than the other.

Higher is always better. A peak is good too, but sound tends to focus under the peak so you'll need acoustic treatment there. The photo below shows how I treated under the 12' peak in my home studio.

What about a high slanted ceiling. Is that not the best?

thanks for the input guys, any more opinions would be welcome. wow ethan that looks like quite a big live room! mine will be smaller with a "steeper" peak, if that makes sense! would it make sense in my case to maybe use bass traps up there instead as it would be nearly a right angle?

I'd agree with Panda. A high slanted ceiling will give you the lack of slap with the least height loss and no focusing of sound at any particular spot.

Dave,

Yeah, it's 34 by 18 feet. I've recorded small orchestras in here many times.

All corners focus the sound, so the steeper the angle, the more bass traps will help.

It would make MORE, not less sense than Ethan's wide angle peak.

thanks guys i think were gonna wait to see it finished and then think about bass trapping it. definately happy its not an average flat ceiling, what with all that slapback
