Hey all, I have a Tascam M-308 on the way for my Tascam 48. I've been reading as much as I can on this forum. I don't have the manuals for either. There was a mention of using the busses in from the tape deck to the mixer. I'm not sure what cables to get. I'm using the RCA in/out on the 48. Do I need rca to rca? rca to 1/4"? TS or TRS? My return to analog started 08/15/09. I had the 48 repaired and calibrated for ATR tape. (ATR Studio Master). Also, I need phantom power for my mic (Audix VX5), any suggestions? and how is the connection made to the mixer? I'm from Portastudios and mixer/deck is new to me. By the way, I returned the ZED to the store and want to say thanks to you guys for helping me out.

Its an M-308 as opposed to M-308B? Just confirming that it is the non-phantom-powered board.

If you don't plan on recording more than 4 tracks at a time then you'll want two 8-channel RCA to RCA snakes. You'll connect the 48 inputs to the two sets of RCA outputs from the PGM groups (2 sets of 4 making 8 connections), and the 48 outputs will go to the 8 RCA TAPE returns.

For tracking more than 4 tracks at a time you'll ant to use DIRECT OUTs on select mixer channels. Just go to Radio Shack or whatever and get 4 RCA to 1/4" TS adapters and you'll be set.

Thanks for all the help Sweetbeats. I'm wondering now if mogami patch cords/snake would be a big improvement over the regular rca's. The cost is about $350 alot of money.

almost forgot

I got the M-308 from Audio Proz in Mass. It is refurbished mint. It should arrive in a few days. I paid $480 with the shipping.

Look forward to a report of its safe arrival. Good deal.

I personall don't think it is worth spending that much on cabling unless you've got that kind of money. Arguments abound and many say they can hear the difference...I could hear the difference too...the difference of the piggy bank missing about $350.

Hey, there are people that have a preference of the hard drives they use in the DAW because different brands sound different... At the risk of being unkind and self-righteous I just thank that is absurd.

There is indeed great quality cabling, and there is bad quality cabling, and then there is a pretty wide field in between of good quality. Poor quality cheapy cables run the risk of poor solder joints (I've seen some really bad soldering in cheap cables) and wiring with a higher capacitance, but I've done real well using good quality generic Switchcraft type plugs on my snakes I've built and standard Gepco Gepflix multi-core cable...and its the black jacketed 24AWG stuff not the heavier (and mildly more expensive) blue jacketed 22AWG stuff. The wiring is consistent, the quality and shielding is good. I'm also totally comfortable using Tascam or HOSA molded plug snakes and I use a bunch of them and I betcha a bunch of the folks around here do without a second thought.

If you are really curious about it get a few feet of Mogami cable and make 1 cable and do an A/B comparison y'know? I'm not saying that Mogami isn't higher quality...I'm not even saying that something might not sound better using that type of cable, but I wouldn't say it is necessary. I'd use Mogami or equivalent cabling for mics before using it for line level snakes...that is where bad quality cabling is really going to make itself heard and the very reason why I've got some mic cables I don't use anymore.

Thanks again Sweetbeats! I'll check all that out. I'm also looking at phantom power for the board. I've been looking at pre-amps. The Safe Sound Audio P-1. I think it has phantom power built in. It seems like it might be the one to track through. I've been looking at some others also. Daking/Black Lion etc.
