OK folks,
Here it is. Just did my taxes and luckily I have been allowed a "music budget" by my lovely wife of four years. After getting all the stuff I needed to get my bass gear up and running I am left with a grand total of $244. I am not trying to record anything for release. I just want to write music on the computer using drum tracks and my bass, and to work out and record vocal lines and keyboard parts. I have the software (Cool Edit and others) and I have an adequate PC ( I know because you folks helped me out before on this point!) Now I am ready to work out how to hook up my vocal mic (Shure 58), my bass, and my keyboard to the PC. I will be tracking one thing at a time but I like the idea of a mixer so I can just set it up and go, make connections at the front and control monitoring etc. I have been looking at the Soundcraft Folio Notepad. If I were to purchace this for $169 ($180 shipped) what cables do I need to complete this set-up and be able to record and monitor? Also, I have posted before and was advised to look into Audio Buddy and Behringer pre-amps. I have done this but I am now steering toward the mixer because you get pre-amps and it seems easier to deal with muti connections. However this is at the expense of buying a better soundcard. Right now I have the Santa Cruz which works well for me. AM I on the right track? Is the Soundcraft a wise purchase? Any advice?

Hi Bishop,

No too sure on the pricing's where you are as I'm in the UK, but I'll try my best:

Shure 58 - XLR to XLR high quality mic lead into:

Either your notepad or a semi-decent pre-amp (Personally I've got a Focusrite Penta which is a class A pre-amp and optical compressor all in one. This would probably be a better purchase for you, budget permitting, as bass and vocals usually need compression, it has presets for these and it has an instrument and mic input on the front for easy swap.)

Then you need a cable from your pre or mixer to your soundcard, make sur this is good quality as it's your siginal path.

Then to monitor you need a cable from you souncard to your amp.

Hope this helps.
