I was sure there would already be a thread on this but I didn't see one. I also found suprisingly little info on this on Cakewalk's site. What are the main differences between Pro Audio 9, Sonar 2.2, and Sonar 2.2XL?

I have Pro Audio 9. It came with my soundcard. I haven't really used it yet (I've always used N-trk), but I plan on diving in tonight. I will probably go for the update to Sonar but I don't know which one.

O.K. I don't know why I couldn't find this stuff on their site before but Sonar 2.2 XL = Sonar 2.2 + mastering software and drum sample thingy. Not being totally familiar with Pro Audio 9 yet, I'm not sure, but it looks to me like PA9 does most things Sonar does with a few less bells and whistles.

The main differences between PA9 and SONAR are

  • Support for ACID-style loop editing
  • Support for DX8+, DXi (DirectX Instruments) and WDM drivers for low-latency operation (enabling real-time DirectX effects processing and DXi playing)
  • Revised interface with digital audio editing right in the main track view.

And
  • Automatable FX's
  • Per project audio folders (with 2.0)
  • finer grid settings in Piano Roll View (1/8ths, 1/16ths, etc)
  • Shaded grid for sharps and flats in PRV

The automatable FX mentioned by others are really
a huge improvement. And the per-track folders
for audio makes management much more rational.

I did not get the XL, mostly because I do
audio, not MIDI, and the DXi drum synth was
not imporant to me, and I already had
mastering plugins.

If you are happy with n-Track, why change?
I nearly went with n-track instead of Sonar,
again because the MIDI sequencing stuff is
not what I do.

"If you are happy with n-Track, why change?"

Because I want the mastering plug-ins. I'm also assuming that once I get up and running, it will have other features I find important. I already went ahead and ordered it. I hope it's worth it because it's more $ than I really can afford. Looks like it's ramen noodles for a few months. Right now, I'm having a hell of a time with Pro Audio 9. I'm about to put a post on "Computer recording & souncards" about it because I think my problems are more than just Cakewalk.
