Which mics are the best as far as sound qaulity, regardless of cost? Also which ones are used in the industry the most, by bands, rappers, singers?

Brauner, Neumann, Coles, Audio Technica, Shure, DPA, Earthworks, Radio Shack, AKG, Royer.

Harvey- the correct answer is the 1960 Gibson ES-335. I'd own one but I misplaced my checkbook. :)

Shure sm57 and anything by Neumann (U87, U47, etc.)

You might have gotten some more serious answers if there hadn't JUST been a long thread recently right in this same forum titled something like:

"What's the best vocal mic regardless of cost"

(that may not be the actual title)

search back a couple of pages, it's there somewhere.

The best mic is whats already plugged in and ready to go, but then I'm kinda lazy.

Its interesting how I get serious answers from some, regardless of whether its been asked before or not, I think that the serious musical enthusiasts need to get some humor or patience, maybe they'll write a song that is meaningful to fans that can relate.

To those of you who actually tried to be helpful and provide info that was meaningful, thank you. For the ones who consider themselves to be all knowing and only type in htese boards to prove their intelligence (in music matters, forget common sense), get a life, go try to produce a good record, and stop trying to put others down. Peace

DJ, I'm with Harvey on this one. You asked, "what's the best car, regardless of the price?" The real answer is the right mic in the right place at the right time. What's the best tool, regardless of the price? The one that's right for the job. The finest hammer is a lousy hacksaw. There are a few, however that have withstood the test of time. Most of the albums you've ever heard were recorded using a Neumann U87 ($2500, give or take) and a Shure SM-57 ($80, give or take). I'll bet you'll find very few people on this board that don't own a an SM-57, and very few people who don't wish they owned a U87. The fun part about recording is the day you manage to put a $100 Russian mic in the right place at the right time, and you know that if you put a U87 there, it would be the wrong mic in the wrong place at the wrong time. Us Po' folk have to find that place and time. For some, like Littledog, they've transcended that moment and get to try a Soundelux instead of the Neumann. For others, like Harvey, he's gone beyond that. Well, he could break out a Neumann, but he knows if he gets the placement just right, a $100 Russian mic will be perfect. And if not, he'll do something truly original- use an SM-57!-Richie

Mics

I would first off like to apologize for asking such a broad question, I am young and new to the recording industry, I will try to be more precise in my choice of words for future questions.

Richard, I appreciate your info, it makes sense.

For me, that's my $5 PC mic hooked into my built-in soundcard :)
I'm too lazy to hook my Soundelux U97 into my Great River MP2 and set up N-Track and my Delta 44. By the time that's all ready to go, I've lost the muse :(
