assuming you are talking $125 for a pair, I would say, keep a keen eye on the used market...Ebay??
or...maybe some decent hifi speakers to at least get you going. Not really recommended, but maybe use your stereo amp and speakers to start you off.....or your computer speakers if you have to. If you could save up to at least $300, you'd be in a much better position to get some more *accurate* speakers geared especially for monitoring. But, if you can record on your stereo/computer, and it sounds good on a lot of other systems too...(not too bassy...tinny, etc), you'll be in decent shape to start off.
