Our drummer wants a piccolo snare. He dosnt want to spend more than 150, but he could go a little over if you guys really think its worth the extra money. We play 311 type stuff, and he wants that piccolo sound like sexton has.
Thanks

Sexton does have a piccolo snare, but it's not his primary snare and gets very little use. His snare sound is the result of 20 plies, large vents, and ultra tight heads. It's actually the same exact snare that I use, plus 10 plies. Pearl makes some decent piccolo snares in your price range, but I think if you're after Chad's sound, you might be happier with a soprano snare. It has that high pitched crack, but still retains some depth.

As elevate syas, Pearl has some decent low cost piccolo drums. They make a series (don't remeber the model numbers - but the drums are 3x13 and they have a wood, steel and brass model.

The wood ad brass are about $150-$170 and the steel is about $100-$120.

I own the wood and steel Pearl piccolo snares. The wood drum is my favorite snare - and has become my main axe. I've had several musicains comment how good it sounds (I use an Evans dry vent batter with the standard Pearl resonant head).

www.musicyo.com has some decent piccolos and sopranos for cheap. The 7x12 copper has received some nice reviews on rec.music.makers.percussion. In addition to the two Pearl snares mentioned by mikeh, Pearl makes a "power piccolo" in 5x13 in steel and brass. I've got one, and it's got more body to go with the piccolo crack.

The Sunlite piccolo has also received surprising praise on rmmp, and you can find those for $50-$60.

I have the 3x13 Pearl Brass Piccolo and it records very nicely.

I'll have to second (or third??) the above remarks re: the Pearl Piccolos - I have a 3X13 brass model and it sounds great both live and recorded...and the price is nice!

hello!
ludwig makes a really good picollo! i just bought one and i love it! i've been able to get so many different sounds out of it! i play in a hardcore/indie rock band and i love how it sounds with us and it was only $130! a lot of the bands i've worked with on recording projects have had pearls though and i enjoy them emmensely as well so i suppose it's really a matter of taste. just tell him to make sure he tries out a whole bunch of them before buying! that's the best way to make sure you'll be happy. good choice in snares! have fun!

Our drummer just got a 12" Tama Hand Hammered snare that just sounds killer. It pops so nicely. He has a great touch anyway but when he hits this thing it just cracks like a bolt of lightning.

i am currently playing a pearl floating brass piccolo. this is a cool drum because you can buy a wood, brass, or steel shell and change them in the same drum. i have the brass shell and the maple. havent used the maple much lately cause i bought a 10" tama maple snare drum, and i have been using this as my main snare. (i must say that my accuracy has gotten alot better:) ) anyway, pearl has my vote!
