What about the Presonus Eureka ???

Here it is,
I want to upgrade my studio by putting some external processors in my rack. I have already a Presonus Firepod. I can only put compressors on the first 2 channels of the firepod, so I would buy the ART MPA gold (2channels mic preamp) with a 2 channels compressor. That's for the channels 1 and 2 of my firepod. For the channels 3 and 4, I would like to have preamps and compressors too, so I checked the Presonus Eureka, which is a preamp with a compressor and EQ built in. I would buy two of them. So do you guys know a little bit about the Presonus Eureka? Is the compressor great ? Is it better to record with separate preamps and compressors? If someone is using it, please tell me what you think about it. Suggestions of other channel strips are welcome too! Another way is maybe possible, do you think i can put a compressor after a preamp then in the ins of my firepod ? That would be easy, juste have to buy preamps and compressors, no need of channel strips!
thanks,
Alex

Go with the new M-Audio Tampa. the pre sounds just as good and the compressor is better. I just order a Neve Portico FWIW The cost is not much more per channel over the Eureka

I recently purchased the Eureka and it sounds bright and warm. It reminds me of the API pres that were on the high end Otari 54 series consoles. It also complements my older 1272, which exhibits a darker sonic quality.

Opening the hood, it looks like there's an input tranny on the left and that the pwr tranny also functions as an ouput tranny (not sure about it though).

The box does tend to get hot and both vents on the side, and large vent on the right top seem to do the job. Overall, I think it's a major improvement over the low budget pres I've experimented with, even the Grace 101 sounds thinner than the Eureka, especially when you start loading-up on tracks and mixing.

I like it.

I have both the Eureka and the MP-20...both have been upgraded with Burr-Brown opamps...both sound terrific!...personally, I prefer the MP-20 (2 channels) thru an RNC, over the Eureka's compressor...but for the price, they're both nice clean pres with good gain...the Eureka has variable impedence control, which also comes in pretty handy if you have a variety of mics...

That would be rather unusual . . . the M80 and MP20 have transformer balanced inputs and servo balanced outputs, so I suspect the Eureka is the same.

I agree, the Eureka is a fairly bright preamp. The variable impedence makes it pretty versatile with lots of mics too.

Oz's suggestion of the ATC-2 would be worlds above the Eureka.

It's brightness and airiness is similar to the APIs I've used. My only criticism thus far is the saturation knob, which contributes little in the way of tape saturation. All it does is darken the tone slightly. The EQ section is also a dissapointment.

Having used it a bit more over trhe weekend, I can say that it's a bright, warm and full sounding pre. The comp is also nice. Quite transparent. No complaints, other than that. Definately a keeper.

Haven't used them. So I don't know.

The only two (what appeared to be trannies), I saw on the Eureka is a small circular one on the left side, and larger circular shaped one on the right (right below the vent on top). I'd be curious to hear from someone who's in the know.
