I currently have some yorkville YSM passive and I would like to upgrade monitors, I was looking foward getting the whardefale, to get a more detailed sound and more accurate.

Would the wharfedale 8.2A be considered as an upgrade? I can get them for about $275

Thanks

Ive also been looking at these two, and they seemed to be most mentioned. From what i've read, the Yorkie seem overall better, and from what other members have said, but by the sounds of it its much of a muchness. Still havent heard comparsion sample thou.

I demo'ed the 8.2 last week and was shocked at how bad they sounded!

Now I'm expecting to get murdered here but I'll continue. (I am not trying to put you off just sharing experiences)

OK. The demo was in a shop demo room. Very little acoustic treatment. Speakers were too far apart. BUT. I couldn't hear any definition at all. They sounded worse than my HiFi speakers at home (TDL). I thought maybe the room had some wierd modes but then heard some cheap Fostex speakers and they actually sounded clearer... no depth of sound, mucky low end... but clearer.

The salesman didn't stay in the room with me. Could it be that he set them up badly? I can't believe that my ears would dissagree with people here like MassiveMaster! I've always found their advice so valuable.

I listened to some Tapco S5's in another store (just sat on boxes in the middle of the room) and they sounded great... in comparison. Unless I get warned off them I think I'll buy a pair next week. ;)

I'd love to hear them all in my room but it's just not possible with these stores.

if i may...
Massives input was a Passive pair from several years ago...i forget what kind of High End amplifier....and the room is probably not drywall and cement.

i thought everyone knew this!

as a gearhead (monitors my favorite)..all threads are great.

you think Tapco's off beat..i bought BW303!... had the wharfs & yorks in the virtual shopping cart about 100 times.

i might be interested in those used passive York's if cheap, seriously...for a listen at minimum.
i live in Hiyauna Lug ...its about 80 yards from the equator on an Island of 10 people. There's a new Super WalMart openning up here, you may have heard about.
:p

I like my active Yorkvilles more than the Wharfes I've heard. From what I've read the quality of craftsmanship is much higher on the Yorks too.

Unlikely seeing as the only option is a bass cut which is basically just the difference between "muddy bass" and "no bass."

They sound exactly like you describe. No detail whatsoever. The tonal balance can occasionally be a useful tool because, frequecy-wise, they tend to translate pretty well. But they are really hard to mix on because of the lack of detail and extension in both directions.

These are also the only speakers I've listened to which actually sound better in a crappy untreated room than a treated one. It seems like they need the extra high-end reinforcement that bare walls provide.

Yorkies are a much more professional tool IMO.

damn..its late so i started monitor thread reading.
someone had the the link in..and i read whole 25 page Wharfedale-mania! story.

still the same conclusion..imo. good cheap stuff stamp of approval here.
how much can you pick apart something that costs $275 and often was chosen over much much more expensive monitors.
then the issues arose toward for the end of BeatleWharfmainia (possibly the largest viewed thread to date? and very good read imo.)
i think some radio station even started a Stamp Out The Wharfedales! drive.
(old beatle trivia joke) :p
Yorks just seemed to have a few more positve lines.

most interesting still is several pro's, who actually have listened to numerous brands, in all price classes still said these lower cost speakers, york & wharfs were ok. with a good amp, the passives seemed to be a good bet with near-zero quality issues. bi-amp capability is there?hmm???

One thing went unmentioned...
no one posted actually having done the Bi-Amped thing with the passives? york or wharfs. other than the capability is there.

with Brystons, or a really good amp, that might bring in some sweetness... maybe like going from a stock automobile to a customized item..
maybe a big time upgrade for $200 or so?

time to go read about bi-amping..... :)
