Hello all,
I am on the brink of purchasing either of these active nearfield's and would like to know if anyone has done any A/B comparison's between the two.
I have carefully auditioned the Yamaha MSP-5's but only had the opportunity to A/B them with Alesis M1 Active's and Fostex 0.5's. (Suffice to say that the MSP-5's are easily a better monitoring speaker than these two...)
I have read excellent reviews about the Wharfedale's, some by professional recording and mastering engineers. I have also read a review conducted by a hi-fi journalist who said something to the effect that if it was flattery you were looking for...look elsewhere. From a recording/mixing point of view I took this to be a very positive statement, indicating that the speaker has a revealing nature to it (i.e. what we all want in a monitor, right?)
By the way, this model is the active version of the Wharfedale 8.2 and has been designed as a studio monitor (balanced connections, shielding, etc) Best of all they are very affordable, in fact most reviewers have expressed the fact that even if they cost twice as much they would be a great deal.
Wharfedale 8.2A...699 AUD (street price; 500)
Yamaha MSP-5...1,390 AUD (street price; 1000)
I can't find anyone who has the Wharfedale's available to audition (hence my request for opinions) but by all accounts it's looking like the extra cost of the MSP-5's isn't justified.
Thanks,
Skan.
