Hello~everybody
Im new here and a beginner of sound recording.
recently,Im going to record my music demo.I've got problem with vocal track.why is it so weak?!and sounds thin?
so I want to ask if anyone can get a Well vocal track with a Dynamic mic(mine is Shure Beta57)??and how can it sound warm?
miking problem?need a preamp?......
and I use this mic to record acoustic guitar too.

it is not your mic.

could you describe your gear and general recording techniques a little more?

describe your signal chain, as in your voice goes into the shure, then into ???? then into ????. etc....

how far are you singing from the mic? how are you listening to the tracks you just recorded?

I use Calkwalk Sonar 2
voice-->mic--->XLR input of BEHRINGER MX 602A--->tape out into Line-in of SoundBlaster Live.

it's about 3 inch I sing from the mic.
I listen the track from a mini hi-fi and audio-technica headphone.

I don't have enough $ to upgrade all equipments,so what any equipments I must get at this moment?
sorry for bad english if I can't describe clearly

your english is good enough. great thing about english really- everyone uses it differently, even in english speaking countries, so english speakers care a lot less about funky usage. anyway,

have you tried slighly eqing your voice to get it closer to what you want to hear? (dont over do the eq it though- just a few db here and there). have you tried any compression?

before you go out and buy anything new, it might be better if you gain some more experience with what you have.

THX~

I tried to use the eq in mixer, but it was still dry, thin and weak.
oh~~don't have a compressor after the mic,is it a must for recording vocal?
just use plug-in software in my pc(compressor,eq,delay,reverb...etc)

You're not going to get a "warm" vocal from an SM57 plugged into a behringer mixer plugged into a soundblaster. All three of these items would be good candidates for upgrading (although the SM57 is a great mic, it may not suit the vocals you're going for).

Slackmaster 2000

yea, agreed they could all be "upgraded", but i am not sure that spending a bunch of money would be the best bet right now... unless the poster has a bunch of cash lying around.

anyway, back on subject- did you try cutting the highs out a little bit and boosting the overall volume?

I'll buy some better equipments if I have money.
and have to know what's more important for me now.buy them step by step.

I tried to cut high and boost Mid...but it seems the sound is too dim?!
and normally, how much Gain and Level in console I should get?
I tried to boost more Gain, but it's noisy.
and my vocal track is always hiding behind all instruments.I mean the singer seems singing too far behind.

Dynamic mics don't have very high output, they need a good preamp. The ones in the Behringer are not so good. It is what it is. You can play with the EQ, but you need: 1. a better soundcard
2. a real preamp. You will never upgrade the SM57, you'll just get different mics, The 57 will always be good for something.-Richie

Hello,
I use the original Sonar 1.0. I don't know how much the interface has change in the new version of Sonar, but have you turned the "trim" control of the trtack that you are recording in Sonar? I had to turn the dB's up on the track that I was recording a acoustic classical guitar only with a Shure SM58. Check this first before you do anything else.

Do you naturally have a full voice that fills up a large room? What I mean is do you sing like a man or do you sing like a mouse?

Breathe properly and sing from the gut. And never sing like a gosh-darn sissy. Throw away your old James Taylor albums. From now on, you are to listen only to Barry White, Henry Rollins, and Tool.

And rent some old Star Wars flicks. Try and immitate James Earl Jones the way he says stuff like "You do not yet know the power of the dark side of the force."

Stuff like that. They're pretty cool movies, too, and it will indoctrinate you to American culture and the English speaking world in general. We all talk just like that.

Hey Chess, James Taylor was God's voice in Randy Newman's version of Faust!

Although, come to think of it, Barry White would have been a cool choice as well.

yes,Im planning to buy a mic preamp, want to try the difference.
I have one question, where should I connect a mic preamp into console?same XLR input?how about the preamp in Behringer?mute it?and is XLR input sound better than TRS jack input?

haaha~I have so much guts to sing cos I record in my room...
no one hear.but maybe I can't sing well enough.
I've got a problem when singing with my headphone on ears,I can't sing a exact tone sometimes.

Anywhither, the solution to singing off pitch with ear phones is to uncover one ear so you can hear yourself and use the headphone on the other ear so you can hear the music you are trying to record to. It is very common to sing off pitch if you use both sides of a set of headphones.
