Weird Playback Volume Problem

i've recorded several tracks through just plugging my guitar right into my pc's soundcard and recording with kristal audio engine. today i tried going from the line out of my combo amp into my soundcard and everything seemed to work fine but when i played it back as an mp3 through my speakers the left speaker was MUCH louder than the right. also, when i put it on my mp3 player and tried playing it through my car stereo via aux. input there was NO sound on the right side. i haven't changed anything since recording directly into the pc - why would going through the amp's output cause this?

The line input of your soundcard is a stereo input. If you plug a mono cable into it, it will only work on the left side. The input is expecting a plug that looks like a headphone plug, with two black rings instead of one, like an instrument cable.

You should also be recording onto a mono track, that would get rid of the problem.

i am using the correct cable. i said that everything was working fine before. the only thing that has changed is that there's an amp in between the guitar and pc now. i'm still using the 3.5mm adapter.

EDIT: OK i tried recording in mono and i think it worked. haven't tested in the car yet but it's fine through the speakers at least now. thanks.

thanks for the help farview. i have another noob question - in what situation would someone record in stereo?
