Weird Cubase 5 Latency Issue

Hello world,

Thanks for reading this post. I am having some really weird latency issues using Cubase 5. Am using a Tascam US-1641 soundcard with a Dell Studio XPS 16 (2.4 C2D, 3GB DDR3, 320GB HDD). Seven out of the 8 mic inputs on the Tascam are being used for Drum recording and the 9th input (Instrument) is being used for guitar.

Miraculously, even with guitar rig 4 loaded on 2-3 tracks, recording simultaneously, along with compression, reverb and gates on the drum inputs, I am getting ABSOLUTELY NO NOTICEABLE LATENCY. The problem is that there is significant latency on the recorded track. As in, when I am monitoring + recording, there is 0 latency, but as soon as I play the recorded file, I realise that there is some sort of "empty space" at the beginning of the track. So basically, if I want to loop, say the first 4 bars of the recording, I just cannot simply select the 1st four bars and just "duplicate" them, I need to adjust the left selector to just where the waveform begins and right selector to approximately where the loop ends and then cut the whole thing, or just loop it. I hope you get the picture.

Why would this be happening? I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling Cubase, but to no avail. Am thinking of borrowing Sonar from a friend and seeing whether I get similar problems with it.

Also, there is another issue, sometimes, when I record something, I can monitor successfully (again without any latency) but there is nothing to be seen on the waveforms, and once I press stop, the entire track just gets deleted automatically. Obviously, the "Record" (Red) button is pressed. This issue usually resolves with a reboot, although it is pretty irritating.

Thanks a lot for reading this very long post and any help would be greatly appreciated.

There will always be some empty space for a count in of some sort.

Are you using a click?

What your doing to loop sounds right. You have to have a complete section in time (has to be synced with click tempo on transport)to loop. Cubase has a load of what are called "preferences" You need to go through them and set up a blank template(or use one in Cubase) that is set the way you want, and always use it to start off. In other words Cubase will do all kinds of things automatically based on those settings. i.e. auto save, write wav images, auto backup etc etc.

Thanks for replying!

Yes I am using a click and am using a precount of 2 bars. The problem is not limited to the starting of the track, even when I start in the middle of a track, the same thing happens. Will elaborate more in my next post.

Thank you too for your reply!

I have been using templates since when I started using cubase. My playing is perfectly in sync with the click, its just that whenever I press the record button, the "recorded track" has a kind of delay, whereas the playing is bang on time. But when I play the track back, it becomes out of sync with the click. I will post an image of a track to clarify:

Do you have the adjust for recording latency buton checked?

That's all that I can come up with.

@tetrafish

Yes sir, you bet I do...

Just a little update:

The problem had miraculously solved itself, but I am now getting a "Serious Error"...the one which tells me to save my work and then restart cubase. I dont know man, maybe I will move back to 4LE which I used for quite some time and didn't get any such issues...

One more thing, have you downloaded Cubase 5.5? It's free.

WTF! Really???

Thanks ssssoooo much!!!!!! Doing it now!!! Really..thanks
