Im looking for a weezer (blue album) grunge/distorted type of guitar sound, any tips?

get a guitar, and an amp....

...then plug it in...

....theeeeennnnnnnn.....this is the tricky part.....

...move around that little switch thingy, im pretty sure thats all weezer does, unless they pulled out some smashbox when i wasnt lookin

freak

He recorded damn near the whole blue album w/ a vintage Les Paul through a Marshall amp. I also read in Guitar World that he had the amp's volume turned really low.

BTW, the rhythm tracks on that album don't have a lot of gain. That is why they sound so huge.

well

weezer has used marshalls and boogie's both... their personal fav was a vintage boogie... I dont know if they used it on blue album i think they probably did though. That whole record was basically recorded on a Les Paul Jr(if you get one, get one with P90s, not p100s)...

Keep your gain level kinda low(25%), moderate everything except bass should be a little higher and you'll be in the right direction for blue album. Oh and if you have a Recto use the "Vintage" setting. Yeah thats what I do and it sounds very similiar to the weezer sound. Just mess with it till it sounds good to you.

recto on vintage can be made very similiar to blue album.

I've read that they used the neck pickup with the tone control rolled all the way down. I think Ric Ocasek was quoted saying that, and how he thought it sounded horrible, but worked for the music. I could be remembering incorrectly though.

I'm not sure if the Blue album is one of their older ones, but try turning the tone knob down. Some of the Weezer songs I've heard have high distortion with the tone very low for that mushy sound.

i read where ....

they did one tour with nothing but PODs they said that they went with amps and PODs and that th PODs were easier to control than th amps as far as getting good sound in th P.A. musta been nice for th roadies

dethska:
i read an interview with weezer saying that Ric had to get them to use the bridge pickup, and that *before* they had allways used the neck pickup because it was bassier and soudned better jamming by themselves in a garage, or something.

lesterpaul:
they used the POD's when they were really pressed for cargo space, and playing smaller places, but went back to using marhsall/boogies a while later when they were playing big places again.

im a geek
