Weeks away from my build...

Good day everyone!

My name is Daryl, and I've been lurking on this site for awhile, gathering info, half-ass chiming in now and then, learning and listening. I haven't had much to contribute, or for that matter even ask, as my equipment/space was non existent. However, I've been working the last 4 months, and now have a bit to play around with.

Along with a room in the basement. Ahhh, the joys of being a stereotypical 34 year old living at his parents.

Anyways, I have 6 acoustic panels on the way along with the itch to build some diffusers and really dig in and design a space. I've done a lot of reading on the subject, but I have a few questions specific to the space I'll be working with.

1. I have attached a diagram, hopefully (albeit poorly drawn) with my idea. I only have the six panels right now (designated by the rectangle looking shapes - two in the corners, two above my workstation, and two on the first reflection point). Not my most intelligent question - but is this right?

2. Now the issues that I think may arise...the wavy line at the bottom of the drawing is a proposed "curtain" - there is no wall there, it opens up into a more rectangular space with the next wall about 12 feet away. There are already weights and camping supplies taking up space, and cannot be moved. So...is a curtain a fair idea - or better to leave it open? I know that theater curtains have been mentioned on the topic, but I'd probably just get something closer to a common curtain.
2a. The two skyline looking squares at the bottom (near the curtain) are diffusers. I'm not going to lie - I think they look badass, and would be fun to build. However, I want them to be functional (at least to a certain degree). Is this the best location for them? Is there a better location? I've read that it's best to keep them away from 1st reflection points, but I only have 2" rockboard, and the diffusers seem may receive some reflection from the panels.

3. Would panels/traps on the curtain side be a good idea? I know that all rooms are different, and those will have to come later, anyways, but just planning ahead.

4. Lastly, the ceiling is an issue. It's low - 9 feet - with a foot of flooring (joists 'n what not) where sound could bounce around. In addition, there's a heating duct running right down the middle. How much harm to the sound will it create, if any? Can it be covered with a cheaper material? And how bad/irrelevant is the ceiling?

I'm not going to cover the ceiling with drywall or anything over the top - other than the two initial panels over the workstation, and maybe a couple more panels in the future.

I'm not going to record that loud, mainly just country/bluegrass rock or whatever, and I don't have high expectations for my recordings. However, I am going to purchase basic budget equipment, and want to have as nice a space as possible to work with, and begin the learning how sound works (and how to control it to the best of my ability - no matter how low my budget).

Oh, the room has concrete walls and floor, exposed ceiling.

Thank you for any and all advice,

Daryl

Are you also tracking in the room? if so, what are you recording (instruments, guitars...)? Heavy curtains or moving blankets wouldwork best for that 'back' wall. You need treatment above your mixing area (a 'cloud') or those reflections will negate the other treatment you have planned.

I am tracking in the room as well - it's the only space I have available. And just the basics - guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, vocals. I am going to put the clouds above the mixing station. In addition, I was going to ask the best position to face the amps, etc. Of course, a lot of that is going to be trial and error, but just curious about ideas/how other people do it.

I'm going to go ahead then with the curtain idea. What about the diffusers? Waste of time, bad location?

Thank you for your input,

Daryl
