Just my $.02 worth

I do a lot of sound work with my job. I also work a lot with bar bands/blues bands etc. Everyone goes on about using SM57's or 58's for vocals etc. I have to cover everything from grunge sound to operatic sopranos.

If you are buying mics for vocals, skip the SM's and get the Sennheiser 835, 845, 855 mics. Much cleaner, better response with any voice, great sound level handling and better gain before feedback.

I switched out at work and with the bands and have not regretted it yet.

Granted, SM's will probably take more abuse--That's there biggest plus.

The SM-58 and SM-57 are a little overrated but they are still the work horses of the industy. Mainly because they have a known sound and are virtually indestructable.

Lately I've been liking our new Beta 57a, they are the most versitial mics in the shure line. Great on drums, vocals, gtr amps, everything. They are hyper cardional so they have great gain before feedback and they have the winscreens like the 58 so they are tougher than the old 57. They also pretty much sound idential to the 57 on axis. We also have some Beta 58a mics, they are ok, a small step up from the SM-58 but they are a little honky sounding on some singers.

I'm a little nervos about buying dyamics other than shure because I know it 5 or 10 years I can still sell my shure mics and get atleast 75% of my money back.
