edit:: multitrack software

hey everyone, i just started recording and i'm getting frustrated  with how to use this stuff, so i have a

couple questions:

1. how do you mix sessions together (eg. a guitar session and a vocal session)?

2. if i wanted to record a vocal part to a guitar i played before, what do i do to play the guitar part through my headphones while i record simultaneously?

3. does anyone recommend acid 4.0? if not, then what else?

thanks! :D

as far as i'm aware wavelab is an audio editor (and a good one).
but not a full blown multitrack software.
if you list your computer configuration it will help me make suggestions including your pc configuration ( amd ?, intel ? ghz ? number of drives ?).
and what mics and mixer and sound card you have.
if you want to record different sources to different tracks
(eg vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums etc) you will need multitrack software. if you wish me to recommend some - just ask.

any suggestions for this setup would be gladly appreciated!

amd athlon 2800+
512mb pc3200 ddr ram

e-mu 0404 soundcard
playback from sound blaster audigy 2zs

yamaha mg10/2 mixer
sm57
rode nt1a

thanks again :D

I'll save manning1 the time.

Power tracks at pgmusic.com. Only $29. If you dont beleive him just go to the pgtracks forums..

:D

actually vestast they bumped the price to 49 bucks with the release of ptpa version 9 according to scientist. i think because they include in the new version the tc helicon vocal harmoniser.
also check out their band in a box musicman ;used by thousands of mac and pc musicians around the world. it might be usefull to you . i dont know.
rather than being a multitracker. as the name implies its software that lets you - difficult to summarise easily - set up a "midi back up band".
you enter chords, choose song styles etc and a back up band is created.
usefull for fleshing out song ideas for songwriters. then you could bring everything into powertracks and add your lead vox, guitars, other instruments tracks etc etc. and mix and burn a cd.
(lots of smileys to you vestast - i love smileys - the world would be a better place imho if everyone had a smiley year with each other).
another great multitracker i recommend is magix music studio i use,
as well as multitrackstudio.com. both of these seem to work no matter what terrible sound card a person has, and tracks always seem to line up.
btw - you have a nice powerfull pc . make sure dma is enabled on your hard drive(s).

Before you go and buy anything try sticking around these boards and read for about a month. Your education will enhance your recording skills and sound better than any cheap software. There's many books out there to read also. One I would recommend is Modern Recording Techniques by David Miles Huber. Try your local library. You'll be surprised at some of the stuff they have there for you.

Welcome to the BBS mu5icman.

whats dma?

and thanks everyone for all the great help. :D
my music teacher recommended sonar software.
but yeah, i guess i'll keep on lurking the forums.

edit:: thanks for the warm welcome :)

tell your music teacher to try the ones i recommended.
it amazes me how teachers often dont know all the available options.
also tell your music teacher to check out the notation editing in powertracks. a great teaching tool. and the guitar fretboard and keyboard flashing lights showing notes being played. another teaching aid. as well as the product called "band in a box" used by loads of teachers and music pro's around the world FOR YEARS (mac AND PC), another great teaching tool. the way it shows you chord interactions in different song styles is an invaluable teaching aid.

DMA = direct memory access, if you dont have it enabled on your hard drive(s) you wont get the full performance of the hard drive. in a word FAST. which audio needs. you can check dma is enabled by looking in the hard drive properties in control panel.
in summary MAKE SURE DMA IS ENABLED.
