I am pretty impressed with the specs on the Wave Digital DAW's but I am curious. Has anyone out there tried to build one with the same specs from scratch? I am toying with that idea but I am curious if anyone has had any experience. Technically and price wise.

If you have purchased from Wave, what do you think? Do you know of any other companies to look at?

FYI...I'm running Cakewalk.

Thanks in advance

Someone on one of the recording forums somewhere raved about them.

I have spoken with Gil and Chris who were helpful. I'll very likely purchase my DAW from them next month: probably Digi 001 with Protools LE 5.1 and one of the "Advanced" or "Ludicrous" Mac systems. I'm would not be surprised if they are significantly more expensive than a DIY project but
  • I don't want to make the time for the research and construction of a PC or Mac; I work hard at my career and have other hobbies and a family
  • I don't want to learn (suffer) from my mistakes the hard way
  • a major component of DAW performance is the set-up. I well-set up DAW (cache, file compact, etc) of modest CPU, RAM, drive capacity can blow away a poorly set up computer with faster more powerful components. I'm sure there are tricks of the trade--like all fields--that I simply would not be aware of. They do this everyday for a living. Let them sort out the gremlins for me. That's my opinion.
  • time is money. I can make more working than I would researching and putting together a PC or Mac.
Nevertheless, constructing your own PC or Mac would be an incredible learning experience and something to be proud of. Just my $00.02.

DAW options

http://www.Soundchaser.com is another very helpful group which is dedicated to PC recording. After I bought two Pulsar soundcards from Guitar Center's "going out of Creamware" sale, I couldn't get update CDs anywhere, and Creamware wanted $280 for them. Soundchaser sent me one free. Their catalog reflects their focus on PC recording.
