bit rate is the frequency at which bits are passing a given point.
what you're probably looking at has to do with MP3s. MP3 is a compression and isn't something you should export to unless you are concerned about space issues (ie. putting it on the web). A 44.1kHz, 16 bit Wave file is what you need in order to prep it for CD.

however, if you still want to do an MP3...the higher the bit rate, the better the quality. But also, the larger the size. 128kbps is a standard, or what a lot of manufacturers call "CD quality" (although, it's not really CD quality).

Heck, if I can hear the difference between a 320kbps MP3 and the original CD...anyone can!
And 128kbps sounds like poooooooooo! Anything under 192kbps (and even then...) are not to be considered for ANY serious job.

kbps stands for kilo-bits-per-second.

Standard CD quality is 44.1 kHz at 16 bits, so that equals 705,600 bits per second or 705 kbps, about double the precision or quality of 320kbps.

But don't forget that you have 2 tracks, so that equals 1,411,200 bits per second of a CD quality stereo mix, so that is possibly 4 times more information or quality compared to 320 kbs.

Not sure how they account for stereo or not stereo with respect to kbps information (?)

Although, when I use Real Player to convert CD audio files into data files, they are listed as 1,411 kb WAV files. So maybe that is the answer, and 128kbps is roughly 1/10 of CD quality at 1,411 kbps.
