Was it Beck that put up the post about doing a lot of digital to analog conversions?

I think so? Having dug out my 16bit / 44.1kHz digital multitracker after a year or so of non use and having put the last creation from it through the Otari 5050 1/4" at 15ips and quite hot, I have to note how much nicer the result was than just off the BR1600's mastering functions. A nice bit of tape compression (who needs an expensive mix bus compressor then?) and some nice tape saturation and warmth that tamed those spiky bright bits and seemd to knit everything together nicely and mellow it all out.

Now I think I know what he was talking about.

I'll do that every time now when using a digital tracking source so there'll be a tape stage in there as well. If you've got the option and haven't tried it, give it a go.

Thanks for that hint Beck :).

It's amazing all the good info that the guys post on this forum. I too have learned a lot from them.

I've learned LOTS though this board. Haven't had a chance to put much of it to use, but I bookmark and remember all I can.

Yeah, I’ve talked about layback to open reel both as a mastering stage and for “fixing” commercial CD’s that were just too edgy for my golden ears. :o

I swear by it. I’ll even transfer CD to open reel at 7.5 ips because 15 ips can be too clean.

You’re welcome… glad someone found it worked for them as well.

Hey Beck, you need to revise your sig. The back is where someone pats you on the back feeling for the soft spot to stab you.

I like doing that same audio "faux pas"...and go from the DAW back to analog...back to tape.

I just finished mastering a 10-song album, and the final step was to hit my 1/4" tape deck with the mix, and then just capture the deck's output back into the DAW.

I'm placing a stereo EQ on the outputs of the deck so I can adjust what comes off the tape, but the digital spikes, edginess, etc...all goes away.

Ah yes 7 1/2" Tim, when I was first mucking around with the Otari in this role I had it unintentionally switched to 7 1/2" for 30 seconds or so and I did notice that it sounded pretty good at that speed. Might try an experiment between 15 & 7 1/2 and see what I prefer.
