Hey People!

Here's a little war song I cranked out last night. It's probably the most serious song I've written. (by the way, don't jump down my neck for being for being pro this or anti that...The song kind of wrote itself after watching CNN and placing myself hypothetically in the place of a soldier)...and don't try to adjust your speakers. The song has spliced in pieces from CNN last night. Oh, and if you don't like the work F*CK, you might not want to listen to this (it's in there a few times).

by the way...it's my typical mix of instruments: acoustics, voice, bass and drums.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

I love your voice man. Damn you have evolved quickly as far as recording quality (yeah, I've been following since talkin smack ver 1). I like the song. Sounds more like what's happening than an anti/pro song....So hopefully you won't have to go rounds with the perpetually argumentative. Anyway, good song, I really have nothing to say for improvement.

I have to add though, when the kick drum starts beating hard, I can hear (in my mind) an organ in the distance. Nice work :)

RICHHEAD: Thanks man! I think you're the first person to say you like my voice. I've always thought it was so-so...but thanks! Just out of curiosity, did it seem to be maybe "right" heavy on your speakers or headphones? I'm having issues transfering it over from my recorder...as for the quality of recording, These last 2 songs have been created using a lot more of the capabilities of the Roland VS-880EX (effects, mastering stuff). I've had the damn thing for like 2 years, but it's so freakin' complicated I just kind of gave up on mixing and bouncing until recently when I found a web site that explains all that stuff in laymans terms. Up till then, I've been transfering each track one by one to my computer, but I could never get that full, ballanced sound I can get doing it all in one spot. I'm digging it! I still have a ways to go...

Thanks!

yeah, it is a little right heavy, but just a little. I assumed it was intentional, but it doesn't bother my ears.

As to your voice, I'd like to hear it raw a little bit too.....that thing is layered. It's a cool effect for sure, but you need to let that thing hang out on its own at some point. Just another thought.

Again I gotta say, your improvement has inspired me to do better. I'm gonna post something here soon...

Ya, I gotta figure that right heavy thing out...oh well...

As far as the voice thing, I always intend to use one single voice, and now I kind of can now that I can give it it's own place on my recorder now that I understand it better...however, I always do a double voice for backup purposes with the intention of just turning it up during the choruses, but I kind of get lazy and enjoy the extra "fullness" I could probably loose it in a mix.

I'm glad I could be an inspiration of sorts! I'd love to hear some of your stuff!

Nice work man. The whole thing is pretty smooth and arrnaged well. I'd go for a little more crisp on the vocal and move it out front just a tad more. The drums sounded pretty nice, could move then back a little and bring up the kick a bit and back the snare down a hair. and leave the guitar between the drums and the voice. You got the left right panning thing good. The front to back plane seems a bit cluttered. I`m impressed, good singing too.

Only two peoples responses to this tune?

TOKI987: Thanks for the info! I'm planning on re-mixing this with info from your comments (and RichHead's). I've been listening to it on a few sources and have more or less come to many of the same conclusions.

I think I need to tinker with the CNN stuff a bit. Did that bother anyone? I wondering if it was going to help or detract.

Thanks DWBass. Any other adivce before I remix this puppy tonight?

Yeah I have a peice of advice. Drop what you are doing and come record my guitar! lmao

I'm bumping this cuz it's pretty damn relevant to today with the whole war thing going on, and I've been working on this tune lately to play live with the new band, so here it is again for anyone who may be interested...

What did you use for vocal compression? Sounds good and full!

Hey...I'm using the Behringer Ultra Dyne Pro, which is a compressor. It's got this self compressing thing that you can select, which I often do cuz I usually don't know what the hell I'm doing around a compressor, but you hit a button, just sing or play into it, and it sets it up. you can also adjust it manually which I try from time to time, but this seems to get me through the murky world of compression 9 times out of 10.

Thanks for listening!
