Hello,

I am looking at getting started. I basically have nothing with the exception of a Sm-58 Mic that I used for live shows.

I have been around the music biz for years but have no clue where to start in the recording avenue. I see that there are many products that are self based and many products which are computer based. As with anyone who is just starting out, there is not much money to be had so my choices must be good ones from the get go.

Here is what I am asking of the forum.

1. What are some good manuals/books that will easily explain to the new user how to get them started. Only time and experience will make good recordings I know this, but I am looking for something low key.

2. Which would you suggest. 1. Computer based software or 2. An all inclusive unit that will do it all?

I am looking for something fairly easy on the pocketbook and nothing with a huge learning curve.

Thank you for your help in advance.

First of all - welcome.

When I first started I bought a book called "Anatomy of a Home Studio: by Scott Wilkinson.
My version was published in 1997, so some of the info is outdated, but most of it is to do with general terms and explanations which haven';t changed much. I got my copy in 2000 and it still has lots of good stuff in it.
There is a guy called Craig Anderton who writes books on Home Recording. He seems to be well thought of - but I've never read hsi stuff.

There is a huge amount of good info on this site. Do a search in the newbies forum for whatever you feel like reading about - someone will have asked it and had a few answers already. Or go straight to the forum for info.

There are folks on this BBS who use both methods for recording and both work well. My choice is computer based, simply because I have a PC anyway and (I believe) it's easier to update etc etc.

How much is your budget?
What would you like to accomplish?

Thanks James, that site looks like just what the doctor ordered. I am so looking forward to getting started.
