Hey guys, I have a project coming up and I want to beef up my pre collection after the "great sell off of 2003"...hahahah. I've just been demoing for a while so all I have left in the studio is:

Dan Al 1272 clone
Presonous Digimax
Digi Design 002 pres

I love the Dan Al but I use it for everything. I need some variety. The project is a very loud indie rock band (read: not "heavy:, but very loud. No KROQ prefab bullshit).

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Brent Averil API 312
Great River MP1NV or 2NV
FMR RNP
Avalon AD2022
GML 8302
Phoenix DRS-2
Vintech 1272

If anyone has any of this stuff let me know. I'd like to get 4 more channel of Pre. Also, if you have something on this list that you think I should know about let me know. Oh yeah, we have $2500 to work with.

Rock!

(ps If you're reading this and notice it falling in the ranking can you give it a friendly bump...I'd so much rather buy a pre from you guys then strangers...)

Look around for an Audix 35102.
Brent used to rack them.
up to 80dB of the sweetest gain you'll ever hear.

Think.... API pre meets Neve EQ.

Thanks

Thanks so Michael. We're really looking to score a few solid pres on this project. I'll definitely check the Audix out.

Thanks again!!

They're hard to come by, but if you can find them, they're golden!
I have 4, and I'm keeping them all. ;)

Yeah, I'm finding out that there doesn't seem to be a huge used market for quality pres. Why would anyone want to sell them if they are quality you know?

Very cool. Thanks for your help. You guys are great!

Very cool Machael. I'll check it out. You would recommend these over anything I listed above?

Of the ones you listed, the only other ones I have are the API 312's.
I haven't used any of the others, so I can't really comment on them.
I'd like to have a great river, myself though.
I don't know about the Vintec. I think if I were going to get a Neve Clone, I'd get one from Brent Averill Enterprises; Plus, you already have the Dan Alexander clone, I'm not sure the Vintec clone will give you that much more flavor.

The 312's is IMO a phenominal pre. Fast, punchy, all around... very good.
Recently, BAE has swapped out the original 2520 Op Amp, with one they have developed themselves. I'm not sue how it effects the pre. All the ones I have have the 2520 Op Amp.

You can hear the 312's, and the Audix 35102's here on some common microphones.

The Calrec 1161 is another great pre, probably real similar to the Audix 35102.

The Telefunken V672's might be a good option for you too.
(There's nothing wrong with the ones you have listed, I'm just think of more options for you.) If I were doing LOUD, Hard, Rock-n-Roll, I think I'd look harder at the 312's and the V672's.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. I'm pretty much thinking I'm going to buy a Great River MP-2NV and a BAE two channel 312a. But it would be with the new Op Amp since I would have to buy it new sinec no one seems to have them for sale. That would give me two channels of 1272 (kick, snare) two channels of 312 (overheads) and one channel of 1073 clone (room). Anything else we use on the drums will get the cr*ppy digimax pres or the 002 pres. But at least I took care of the meat of the kit with nice pres.

Thanks so much for the audio samples. I'm at work but I'll check them out as soon as I get home. I only have three more weeks at my job before I quit and start this project. I need to get this gear quick and get it set up!!

if i were you i would keep my eye out for an aurora audio GTQ-2. i just saw one on ebay. it is 2 channels with eq built by long time neve employee(geoff tanner)and based on a 1073 but better. it is everything you could want. on the other hand you will not be dissapointed by the great river.

if your looking for 4 quality pre's in the 2500 range your probably gonna have to look into a modular setup

something like OSA mic pre's with a lunchbox or API pre's or the new Tonelux line (made by the former president of API), You can get 4 pre's or OSA or API NEW for about 2500 not sure about tonelux but I'd definitly check out tonelux supposed to be something new www.tonelux.com

Thanks so much guys. Researching my brains out as we speak. Lots to learn. Big $$ to our little band so I gotta make sure I get the right thing.

Thanks to everyone who has posted here!
