Just recorded a new band this past weekend.

Overall, I'm very happy with the music side of things. Not totally sure if I'm thrilled with the vocals yet or not, but I kind of like them in a Neal Young sort of way, and the lyrics are outstanding . . .

Have a listen to either of the first two songs. Tell me what you think. It's certainly different.

And before you say anything about the vocals, I did them exactly the way the band wanted it done, although I probably would have tracked/mixed them differently if it were up to me. :D

Thanks in advance !

Song#1

yeah, the vocals sound pretty weak. Can't make out every word easily, and it just sounds....weak....he should give it more "push"

But the rest sounds pretty nice, kinda wish the drums were a lil louder and guitars had dif tones. Nice seperation between each instruments. It's a clean mix!

Mix on the instruments is good. Vocals could come up a bit in the mix. He's not so bad.

Anyone remember a band called Harvey Danger?

They did that tune, "Flagpole Sitta." I . . . I'm not sick, but I'm not well. And I'm so hot, 'cuz I'm in hell.

Remember that one?

Just curious.

Hey Chess,
Very cool song by the lads:) . I like the writing. Nice recording too.
I agree that the vocs could come up some... i like the effected aspect vibe-wise, ....seemed to "swim" ..I liked that. The guits sounded a little too up front and pointed:confused: to me, but that might be preference.
Nice job Chess, g

OK I am just going to be nit-picky because I think your mixes are very polished already.

Grrr...You mix your drums from your perspective and not drummers. I am a drummer so this really throws my ears off at first. :)

Yeah I am definately not a big fan of the vocals in either song.

*Maybe you could bring the kick up just a bit in both songs.

*The fisrt hit at about 17sec in the 2nd song is odd. Did he bend the string or something? Also, maybe when the drums come in, make them sound lo-fi until the hit, it will make the hit sound more impactful. Also triple that crash that is on the right side of the mix on the hit at 17sec. It is just wussy. I get the impression that spot is supposed to be exciting but isn't?

I like it when songs come in and sound thin and then when the song REALLY starts it sounds all full and stuff. Maybe it is just me. I would go for that effect though.

I don't really like these guy's music too much. Very drab and not uplifting. I almost fell asleep while listening to them. Yawn.

Your last few mixes have been excellent. These are no exceptions. These kids did very well by recording with you! I gave the mix * * * * *.

Listened to song #1. I thought overall it was pretty good. I hear ya about the vox. If the lyrics are terrific it's a shame because much of them I couldn't hear ( e.g., "Daydreams of sentimental ???"). They seemed washed out in effects and a little too quiet. They sound doubled and panned rather hard. That was a little distracting on headphones.

There was a guit mostly on the right side that bordered on being abrasive.

But the instruments were very well recorded and are all sitting very well. I especially liked the drums.

Trip....

Mmmmmm... real drums; is there anything they CAN'T do?

Song #2 - I gotta' go against the grain and say I totally loved it. You definitely have to work to make out the lyrics, but as long as that's a choice the band made, go with it. I actually like the vocal levels mixed more like an instrument on this... I mean, I'd never DO IT MYSELF, lol...but this works for me.

Nice work.

Hey, thanks so much for your feedback guys.

Beezo, you give really great and helpful feedback. I wish I could have you here on my sessions. Seriously.

I got the feeling the singer was really self-conscious about his voice. Actually it was quite obvious, in fact. :D He kept insisting on turning his vocals down and adding more layers and reverb, etc. What do you do?

I especially liked the drums.

Oddly enough, the drummer in this band has been on the radio and played on a mega-popular song about 4 years ago when he was with Harvey Danger. Anyone remember "Flagpole Sitta?" My band actually covered that song. It was kind of a trip working with him over the past three days and thinking about that. :D

Chessrock . . your mixes are soo good that I can't ever criticize much unless I get super critical, and still then it is normally something to do with the arrangement and not your mixes.

What do you record to, if you don't mind my asking? SSL and 2 inch? :P For real man, you could tell people that and it would be hard to tell the difference. I just would like to know. It would make me feel better about myself if you said "VTB-1 and Delta 1010 into Sonar2 or something, and with a V67 or NTK."

Your mixes make being critical easy!

That's not too far off. You can feel good about yourself. You got the soundcard (1010) right. And I normally use Cool Edit, but I've been falling in love with Vegas these days. I have a Blue Dragonfly that I use almost exclusively on guitar amps, although sometimes I'll pull out a 57 just to change things up. I also use the DF a lot for vox, whenever I'm not using the SM-7. Marshall mxl603s on overheads . . .

And the DMP3 and mindprint DI port pretty much round out my mic pre collection -- although I also use my Joemeek and modded Bellari RP-220 a great deal.

Your mixes make being critical easy!

I'm not sure how to take that. :D I know what you mean, though.

yup.. like they said....Vocals up, mix was clean as a new car with covers on the seats. thanks for posting it man. This helps folks like me learn a lot. :)

Both songs are pretty cool and the mixes were fine except, as everyone has said...the vocals need to come up. And I suspect when they do some of them might need a bit of auto tune:D.
