Yes I know I have not chose a case yet. I would like a rackmount, but dont want to spend 200-400 dollars on one.

And if I go with a tower, I have no clue what one I'd want

Also, I have not chose a power supply yet.....

Please help me on that one. I want the quietest one without breaking the back

Thanks

ML

PS, please tell me if I am missing anything yet. BTW, I forgot, Windows XP Home or XP Pro?

and I already have a kb and mouse.

Peace

Looks OK but the Core 2 chips are outperforming most anything amd right now.
I recommend an E6600, or E6400 if the budget's tight, and one of the Asus P5B mobos

actually, be carefull there, while that's more or less true, better video cards can have more extensive and faster 2d hardware support as well. When and how much of a diff that makes is hard to say, especially since they are all really fast these days, but it's not like there's nothing for the card to do jsut because it's a DAW.

Dewd, every card produced in the last 8 years has been fast enough, and with enough memory to display ANYTHING you need in DAW software. DAW software is not very taxing at all on the video card.

Why suck an expensive video card?

I swear, a $50 video card will work just as well!
The video card I'm using in my DAW is a pci thing from an ancient Aopen computer(I'd be surprised if this card was 8 megs, and it's probably 4!)

Agreed! I'm running dual LCD's (one analog, one digital) off of a $20 RealTek (I think that's the brand) that I got at Best Buy with a $20 rebate!

I agree, no expensive video card needed unless you plan on playing games or something like that. You also don't need an SLI motherboard so you might want to think about picking another board to save some $.

You can't run a socket 939 processor in a socket AM2 motherboard.

FYI- You'll be best off with NVidia based video cards in a modern computer. I'm running an XFX 7950GT in my DAW which gets extremely heavy use and it performs excellent. Its fanless, so it keeps my system silent running as well. Ive put this card into several systems for those having large LCD (30" and more) and needing dual dual link dvi.

And yeah, dump the amd.

I noticed the difference in 2d performance going from a Kyro I to an ATI 9250 or whatever it is I have now. And neither of those were el cheapo cards, although the Kyro has a lower clock speed compared to cards of it's day due to it's unique architechture that may have been part of the equation regardng basic raster performance.

If I personally invest > $1000 in hand picked componenets for a nice DAW system, I'm not going to go out and by a Radeon X6000 or whatever it is these days, but I'm going to get a solid workstation card from a company with a good reputation for state of the art 2D.

Granted most DAW apps do very little real time graphics other than vu meters, but it's everyday stuff like maxmizing and minimizing windows, dragging them around, having a bunch open at once, I say go the extra mile and drop $100 or so on something decent.

Core2 Duo

Get a Core 2 Duo processor, any model will do. They all have shared L2 cache, although the more expensive models share 4Mb instead of 2Mb, but either way they will outperform anything else on the market.

Plus they run on lower energy and cooler than AMD.

SATA Harddrive 10,000 RPM would be best, but 7,200 will do just fine that's what I have.

Second harddrive with mass storage for all your files

Get yourself a rock solid Motherboard, ASUS has a $75 that will run a core 2 duo and has integrated video. Model P5L-MX. Integrated video will do just fine, upgrade later to a $30 card if you want.

Get at least 1GB of ram, and get it in one stick so you can upgrade later. IF you get 2 sticks of 512, you may have to remove one to make room for a higher capacity upgrade later.

Oh, and don't forget a good power supply. Do not trust any power supply that comes with a cheap case. Think about it, what kind of PSU can they give you if the entire case and PSU is only $40? A good PSU will run you at least $50 alone.

You will never max out an integrated GFx controller or a cheapo $20 card doing the things you mentioned. It just won't happen. Play a video game, and you'll max it out instantly but everyday stuff and recording software won't ever give you trouble.

No but you'll go blind from looking at the blurry graphics if you use your computer for several hours at a time. A good video card makes a huge difference.

Blurry graphics?

Any card that is capable of displaying in 32-bit color mode should not give you blurry graphics. If you have blurry graphics then maybe you should get a new monitor.

just wave a window around the screen, you'll get a crisper response from a better card. All cards are not created equal in 2D performance and quality. No you won't max it out per say, but there is a difference.

The problem is that you don't even realize that you have blurry graphics and poor color reproduction until you switch to a good video card. Then all of the sudden you see how crisp and clear it looks. And the colors are vibrant and rich. It's like thinking your girlfriend is good looking until you stand her next to a supermodel and she starts to look more like Rosie O'Donnell.:D You will reduce your eye fatigue dramatically with a good graphics card.

Or just never let any super models near your DAW

I've read a lot swearing by the Matrox video cards. A few articles and reviews (I'll see if I can dig them up) proclaimed them the king of 2D graphics. A few months ago I built up a wish list for a DAW and the Matrox G450 topped my list for video card choices. The best part is you can find these on ebay for around 12 bucks.
