What do you guys think of Fossilized Walrus Ivory Bridge Pins. Do they make your tone that much better.

No, bridge pins just hold the ball ends in place. Now if you would be talking about the saddle it would be another issue. The strings rests directly on the saddle, that would make a difference in tone.

I know the saddle and nut would make a difference, but I figured the pins might make a slight difference too. I say a set for sale. He had them custom made for his HD35. They outta fit nice in my 41. They look nice............

Thanks,

I always thought pins are universal for the most part, especially company to company. I really want a bone nut and saddle, but I am afraid that if I have them made, my intonation will be shot. Its so perfect right now. They say if it ain't broke don't fix it.........but I really want to hear bone.

And I always thought that the pins had nothing to do with it...

Well, upon hearing c7sus's explanation I did a little research.
He is correct.

Check this out.

When I get home I'm going to break out Dan E.'s Guitar Player Repair Guide and get some more low down.

Bone, in my opinion is the best upgrade you can do for the acoustic guitar. Every geetar I get, my first mod is to "bone it", ie bone pins, bone nut, bone saddle. I can do the saddle and pins myself, but for nutwork, I use a trained lutier.

I too was skeptical that bone pins would not affect the tone, but I was wrong. Upgrading to bone pins is easy......the bridge and nut are different stories. Bone pins will make a subtle difference in your guitars tone.

I debated constantly whether to go to FWI or bone. If you go to some of the acoustic guitar sites, they say that both materials have quite a range in "hardness" and other characteristics. I chose to go bone because its far cheaper than fossil walrus ivory.

Hope this helps!

Thats an awsome site eyes,

Gonna have to look into this a lot more.

Hey Locust:

Just for reference, my most recent "bone" was an HD-28. As I stated earlier, I really wrestled with the fact of choosing between FWI and Bone. I agree with you, the FWI look absolutely awesome, and are quite appropriate with a Martin axe.

You have a tough decision, but Im sure you will fare well. For some pretty extensive discussins (and debates) I checked out two bbs for about 2 months before I made the decision.
