Walkthrough requested !

Hi all ! Cry for help from a technophobe guitarist... Sick of the hassle with all sorts of multitrackers, I went out and got a PC, soundcard (Audiophile 2496)and software (Sonar 3 & Vsampler 3).

I got the card installed, can play all sorts of sounds (mp3, WAV, ...) but I am unable to get this combination to do what I'd like most: playback MIDI files over which I can play and record guitar. I know the AP doesn't have a MIDI sound chip, so I tried to get Vsampler to work (following the video tutorial on http://www.blademultimedia.com/VSampler For Sonar3 Vol1-The Basics.rar ... to no avail. Vsampler outputs no sound when used from within Sonar.

What does work:
- audio playback from within Sonar (MP3 and WAV works)
- standalone Vsampler outputs sound as well (when playing a sample or soundfont)

It's probably a stupid setting somewhere, but as I already told you: I really don't know enough yet - all I want for now is get my feet wet.

Anybody out there willing to help a newbie ? I can provide all settings if needed... Thanks a bunch in advance !

Try using the Edirol VST..it's much easier for basic stuff than the VSampler.

Just insert it in a project with all synth outputs to a new track then set the output of all your MIDI tracks to the Edirol VST.

I agree with Porter. Start with the Edirol and get that working first.

Step by step:
1. Click the DXi Icon to open the Synth Rack. (If DXi Icon is not visible, go to View > Toolbars and click on Views.)

2. Click the star-like icon on the Synth Rack and choose Edirol.

3. From the pop-up window make sure Midi Source Track and First Synth Output are checked (for a single instrument).

4. You should now have two new tracks in your project labeled Edirol - 1 midi and 1 audio. The output of the midi track should be going to the Edirol. The output of the audio track should be set to your Main Bus.

5. On the midi track, select a channel (e.g., #1). Then double click on the Edirol output to open the Edirol DXi. Use the drop down menu for Channel 1 on the Edirol (assuming that is what you assigned the midi track to) and select your desired instrument.

6. Close the Edirol. Select the midi track and open either the Staff View or the Piano Roll view to enter your midi data. If you open the piano roll view, you can test the functionality by clicking on the piano keys. If everything is set up properly you should hear the instrument you have chosen.


Good luck. Once you get this OK, you can try the VSampler. The process is pretty much the same for all DXi's.
