Outstanding !! Great job.. The song has Great groove, and the instruments sound awesome top to bottom. Vocal are really well done also !! I dig it !

Everything sounds great! I used to listen to a lot of 80's music and it's nice to hear it recorded properly for a change. Mötleys old record all have terrible recording qualities.

The vocal is a bit harsh up top, 6k-10k?
But I might be inclinced to leave it the way it is to give the singer a bit of edge.

I really like the song and the parts all fit nicely. The only thing that struck me that could be better is the drums especially the ride. Frequencies could be robbed from the rest of the mix so maybe subtractive eq with other instruments to make room for cymbals. It's all a matter of what you're willing to compromise in the mix so take it for what it's worth. Sounds good though as it is.

Where the cymbals seem to get lost is in the chorus and bridge where you've got two lead guitars (left and right) doing stuff at the same time as the vocals are going. But at other times there's not much sizzle from them. Other than that, I can't find anything disagreeable to my ears!

hey schwarz,
thanks for listening....

i don't know if this should be called 80's music,
just because it was recorded in the 2010's.....! LOL

i was curious by your comment,
so i streamed a few random motley crue tunes on grooveshark, just to see what you were talking about....

and well, i'm clueless.

heheh

that's ok, everybody hears things differently,
i guess as long as you like it, it's cool.

if anything would be a close comparison,
maybe some queen, or pat travers, or SRV or hendrix,
but certainly not motley crue, from what i heard.

yes, the vocal edge was a conscious decision, to stand out against the cymbals, which i also wanted hot.

but in retrospect, i think i would approach it differently now.....
so yes, good call.

this is a pretty dense mix,
but i still want the drums, and the cymbals, mixed fairly hot,
i don't want the vibe mellow, but kind of frenetic....
and the drums needed to be mixed that way to bring that aesthetic out.

i could play with some compression schemes on the overheads, which i did not use on this...
that might smooth out some frequency buildup,
it's cool experimenting with all those changes....
thanks for listening

it's funny, you hear one thing, another guy hears it different...
it's a compromise sometimes, that i go thru, to let one part sort of disappear to let another take front and center....

my mixes seem to be more from the gut, than from the head...

i've gone thru a phase of mixing things 'too smooth', where everything just seems so balanced,
and in the end,
those mixes are usually not very exciting.

i do want to experiment more with cymbal FX, including eq and compression

i think i was trying to mix the cymbals 'honest' more than anything else.

appreciate the comments!

Right out of the gate in yer face! Great performance! Loves me some good wah! Very bluesy. Agree that taking a bit away from the backup vocals might bring in the ride...Tasty guitar playing

Cool jam man. There is some harsh fizzle on the vocals, my nizzle. I think on the cymbals too... Other than that nothing stands out too much. Rock Solid :D

thanks for checking it out phil...

you know, i got curious about the comments on the high end...

so i did a frequency analysis of the entire song...

as you can see, the high end rolls off nicely,
i even intentionally rolled off the high end starting about 2.4khz, to give the top a bit of smoothness.....

what kind of playback system are you listening to?
