Wah pedal question

I already own a Jim Dunlop Crybaby Wah pedal and have no problems with it's tone, but have never really felt comfortable using it... I don't like that there isn't an indicator light to tell u when it is active. I find sometimes that I accidently don't turn it off and it then takes me a few seconds to realise that something doesn't sound right and then it occurs to me that the wah is still on.

Now I've seen one of those Morley Bad Horsie Wah's with the auto on/off thingy. Can anyone give me some advice on how the Morley pedal stacks up in terms of tone compared to the Crybaby and whether anyone has any strong points of view on the matter

God Yes!@

I'm a recovering wah-aholic! To me this is a matter of pure tone. The crababy is a hard-wired inline for real effect, that is when you move the pedal you are directly affecting you signal. The Morely uses photo-electric control ( It has a light sensor that measures the amount of light let in by the pedal ) which drives a transistor which affects your signal, you never get direct contact with it. Also Crybaby's are easy to fix. If the Morely goes wrong you might as well junk it.
If you like the wah-tone of Hendrix, Clapton (yes he used a vox also), most all funk players to contemporaries like Jerry Cantrell then stay with the Crybaby.
Iplay a Crybaby original with no indicator light, I think this should help. ( The light that is. ) So I would try to replace the rubber pads on the inside tof the wah with new ones ( they make them different sizes ) so you can 'feel' the switch. Click on Click off grasshopper. Mine just happened to come perfect though I have played others that sucked. Just practice stepping on and off with the pedal forward. I think you will get it easily if you can feel the switch.
The step on switch sounds cool on the Morley, but the tone is not. Every guitar player I know who has a Morley (unless it's one of those super cool A.C. powered behemoths in the silver case -- Super Cool-- ) has it tucked away in his closet. Also because the pedal only touches a plastic flap it never seems to have the right tension. And last but not least:

"My drummer has a Morley!"

I hate to be down but you asked. I hope Morley doesn't hire Gino or someone to rub me out after crapping on them.

Oh yeah, forgot.

Jim Dunlop does mak a Crybaby with an indicator light and they are great! It's the Crybaby super. It has adjustable sweep like the pros use for a wider range of wah or mow low or more highs ..etc. The Hendrix signature wah has lights too, but it also has fuzz built in.
If you are running a rack unit then I would suggest a rack mounted wah. You could then switch it via midi like any other effect and just leave it on or use it only the patches you want.
Also just hit me, leave the wah on and use and AB box to take it in and outa the chain. This is cool because you could use it like a lead sound and ad a delay or something. If you don't wanna waist the batteries then use an adaptor, but if you're playing out this sucks because you would have to have a powerstrip near your wah.
The AB box will definitely have lights and only costs about 35 dollars.

Thanks for the advice Viking... I think I'll just get one of those Crybaby super's then if they have an indicator light and I'll make sure the rubber foot that contacts the switch is to my liking. It's a wonder tho that Morley managed to get Steve Vai to endorse the Bad Horsie if it is not up to scratch.

Thanks again for the advice.

Cooperman,
The 'Mr. Crybaby Super' is avaible from musicians friend at $99. You don't have to wait though, most usic stores will match any price in musicians friend.
I think I will buy one too, I like the light idea and the range adjust sounds good.
(talked myself into buying something again! Sheesh!)
It is the same price as the Morley, so go to the store and try them. Turn them up loud though, that's where the Morley fails. It's a tone robber!

P.S.: Steve Vai (and most other guitarists) probably never negotiated to endorse it, but his agency, manager did. Most players at his level are into 'holy grail' pedals like crybabys stenciled 'J.H. Exp' on the thing.
Good luck none the less!

Hey Viking... I've been doing some reading up on the Mr. Crybaby Super and it's even a volume pedal as well!!!!! If it sounds good it has to be the greatest pedal known to man - a wah/volume pedal with indicator light - everything I've ever dreamed of in pedal!!! I'm getting one!!!!!!!!!!

Yep! And they now come in cool collectors editions in colors like blue, red, and white!
I'm definitely getting one too!
