I just got the VTB-1 preamp. It has a phase reversal switch (Pol Rev). In what application would this be used? I double track unison vocals a lot....sometimes they are too phasey sounding. If I switch the polarity on the second take, would that eliminate the problem?

I've just received the unit (I'm at work) so I'll have to wait to play with it tonight.

phase reversal

roughly put (and i'm sure someone will flay me for this poorly worded definition, but give a guy a break--it's early here :-)), the phase switch is used in cases where the phase from two mics are "cancelling each other out", usually detected by a "thin" sound coming from the source. here's an example:

say you've got a drumkit. you've already mic'd the kit with overheads, kick mic, tom mics, etc. now you need to mic the snare. you've got two VTB-1's, two sm57's and a snare drum. you decide to go with a mic on the top and on the bottom of the snare. you give it a whack and it sounds like shit through the headphones.

notice how the mics are facing each other? you'll want to flip the phase on one of those two. in most cases, it would be the bottom mic since it is facing up (and thus facing towards the rest of the mics you've got on the kit).

so.......unless you're recording the vocals at the same time with two vocalists and two mics, i doubt flipping the phase switch on your vtb1 will do you any good with the problem you're describing, but hey, give it a shot and if it sounds better with it flipped, bonus. ;-)

sounds to me more like you're having slight problems singing in unison with yourself and are getting a chorusy sound as a result. being able to do that well comes with practice. you might want to try just doing one vocal track and bouncing it to a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) track instead.
