I need a pre-amp...

I have heard the VTB-1 is the best under $200.00

But, are the pre-amp's on the Omni Studio as good?
Because if so, Ill cop that, if not, Im getting the VTB-1.

I need a soundcard...preferrably $200.00 or so, and pre-amp $200.00 or so, which is why I mentioned the Omni Studio...

OR... is the Aardvark 2496 better than the Omni Studio?
And how good are the pre-s on it?

Help is appreciated.

From what Ive heard the pres on the Aardvark are pretty good themselves, You would want the VTB1 for color.

aardvark are good for general use pres (i have a q10). not nearly as good as the preamps on my soundcraft m12 though...

i also have a vtb1 and it is a better preamp than the soundcraft esp. for dynamic mics.

not too big on the tube drive, but..whatever.

Wes,

Can you describe the signal chain used with an outboard pre and a Q10...

Is it as simple as:

mic > XLR cable > mic pre > 1/4 cable > Q10 1/4 insert on back?

Or do you go:

mic > XLR cable > mic pre > 1/4 cable > Q10 1/4" on front... (and does it just skip the preamp from the Q10 somehow?)

I am thinking about adding an outboard pre/compressor for lightly compressing my bass signal while recording and possibly to get a different color option for vocal recording.

Hey Wes-

I'm planning on getting the Soundcraft M8. You seems pretty happy with your M12. Two questions: How good is the EQ section, and what mics are you running through it?

Thanks,

Bob
