Hello, I'm using Cubase Elements and trying to record a VST Instrument track. Im using the HALion Sonic plugin, trying to record a simple instrument effect.

I can hear the instrument playing through my speakers but when I click to record, i get nothing. Im using a interface, and have used cubase for projects before, but never a VST Instrument. Im not using a MIDI Keyboard. I'm just clicking the record button with my mouse, and I do have record enabled. Any Help??

Hmmm. It's hard to answer these types of questions without seeing what's happening.
What exactly do you mean you can hear the instrument but then get nothing?

Have you tried using another VST to see if the issue is just with Halion?

If you don't have a MIDI controller or a MIDI keyboard you should try with the QWERTY keyboard using the virtual keyboard from the transport bar.

To activate the virtual keyboard you have to right click on an empty area of the transport bar (F2) and activate the virtual keyboard.

Or you could draw manually the MIDI notes into the track.

Yep - you need to tell the VSTi what to do with either a MIDI control signal or by 'drawing' the MIDI track (piano roll).

That's why I'm a little confused. How is he getting sound while monitoring until he presses record if he doesn't have a MIDI controller?

Hello,

That's why I'm a little confused. How is he getting sound while monitoring until he presses record if he doesn't have a MIDI controller?

HALionONE has a virtual keyboard on the GUI, my guess is that he is playing the keys with the mouse cursor ;)
He will definitely hear the sounds but it will not record as it is not sending any MIDI information.

Best regards,
GN
