VST 5.1 help please?

Ok so I have 32 bars of audio loaded into audio track 1+2 and it loops nicely. Good so far. Now I wish to use my external midi controller (Doepfer Pocket Control) to automate some effects on this track and record them as automation data so when the loop plays back it automates the FX. I have looked through all the help files I can find and the excellent 'fast guide to cubase VST' but cant work out how to do it. Can someone please explain it to me simply.... me being a simple kinda person

these are easily automated with the "write" and "read" buttons in the upper left-hand corner of your mixer window...press write, play the song, move the fader or whatever you want to automate....then turn the "write" off and activate "read" and it should be repeating your recorded moves

Re- automation

Thanks Rok, I understand that. My question was how to use my external controller to automate the FX... i.e- not use a mouse. Idealy I want to use controls 1-8 to control the soft synth, and 9-16 to control the FX on the same VSTi track, record it all and then export it as audio with all the automation. Hope someone knows how to do it coz its doing my head in.
