[Note] A DXi-compatible program (herein referred to as "host application") is required in order to use VSC DXi.

That is what Cakewalk says about the Virtual Sound Canvas. I do not understand what the VSC is for. I have learned that i can play and record session drummer through it, but that is the only use for with my limited knowledge of the VSC. Can it be an actual midi instrument or is it simply a midi controller for external midi instruments. I dont understand how it could only be a controller with all of the midi voices that it has. Does the quote at the top mean that you need an additional program to create tracks with the midi voices that the VSC offers, or is the "host application" that it refers to actually cakewalk? Please help.

Yes it can, and it is. :)

It's a plugin "emulating" a standalone MIDI-synth with the standard GM/GS patches. Nothing more, nothing less. But the quality is not the greatest. And you need a "host" for it, a program that supports DXi, for example Sonar and HomeStudio (greater than 2002 (?)).

How can i control the voices on it if all I have is Home Studio 2002. I guess what i am asking is, can i effectively use this application to create midi tracks within Home Studio 2002? If so, how?

It is not used to "create" midi tracks, rather it is used to playback midi tracks and give them sound.

I am not familiar with HS 2002, but if it supports DXi's then you can use it to host the VSC.

Where did you get the VSC? If you got it bundled with HS2002, I would assume that means HS2002 supports DXi's.

To use it you need to create a MIDI track. Then insert an audio track into your project and patch the VSC to the audio track in the FX bin. Finally, route the output of the MIDI track to the VSC.

It is all covered in the program's help files/tutorial.
