could someone tell me what the difference between having one vs8f-2 card and having both would be.I just bought a new 1680 with no cards and because of the cost I am hoping one card will do. Thanks Al

Adding one card to your system gives you 2 stereo or 4 mono fx. Adding two gives you 4 stereo and 8 mono.

Whether you need them depends on how many fx you want to add to the mix or an independent track. I.e. Chorus, flange and reverb. In this case you can do with one card.

What I like to know, since I haven't got the 1680 environment, is that if I buy one I still be able to use my external fx proceccers?
