vs1680 vs digi 001

Right now I"m using a 1680 and am getting tired of the learning curve vs recording trade off. Our first CD was done in a friends studio at next to no cost but he moved so I bought the 1680 and an AKG solid tube and while I'm happy with the results of basic recording, I haven't burned a CD yet and I'm just beginning to explore the world of mixing.
My problem is GAS. While in my local Mac store I was introduced to the Digidesign Digi 001 and sent for their FREE video which despite the trendy editing was most effective in creating a previously unnoticed need for a machine that was seemingly more user friendly, moving waveform editing, big screen, color,albeit pretty much the same basic features ( two mic pre's on bd verb etc).
Now I'm not made of money and my wife actually came home today and told me she was in tj max today and after selecting a load of clothing put them back after thinking of the effect it would have on our credit card balance ( gotta love that woman). So she's not dying to have a new recording media in the house or is that why she put the clothing back.......nah.
Also there seems to be a school of thought that we are reaching the nadir of digital gear (48/202?) and rapidly approaching a period where we will have affordable gear that we won't HAVE to replace every six months. ( oh sure )
So I can't find much in the way of reviews on the digi and was wondering (and your question was...) does anyone have experience with this 001 and would you care to share? I'll take my answer off the air!

It's good to see that you have an intelligent wife.
If you want to be a good recording engineer you'll have to learn, whatever equipment you are using. I'm very sure you have the perfect equipment to record a proffesional CD.

Don't loose courage and keep experimenting.

I have my VS880EX now almost over a year. And the first CD that I'm proud of has only been burned only this week-end.
It just takes a while before you know what it takes. You'll be developping your ears better, your insite will grow, including your technical skills.

It just takes time. For all of us.

I think that if you have the 1680 already, definitely stick with it. I have recorded stuff on the sixteen80 and I have also bought a cd that was completely recorded on the 1680. it sounded good until the vocals came in(bad mic). I think the guy could have done a much better job on the eq though.

So, save your money man and use the 1680. its good enough.

Me however, since I don't have recording hardware yet, will spend the 2 grand on a computer and the digi001 and not the 1680. I have heard the digi001 and I believe the sofware hardware combo is way more powerful than the 1680 and for cheaper too(with the 2 grand I can have the pc, digi001 and throw in a cd burner.
 
Hey people,
I, too, am on the fence about going VS 1880 or Digi. I want something relatively easy to operate. I am a musician, not an computer or electronics wizard, but if the Digi is worth it, then I'll put in the time to set it up right. (I'm not totally inept)
Anybody feel the same way about these two systems?
 
I have used the 1680 for about a year with very good success, but I sold it with the intention of upgrading to the 1880 (faster c.d. burning and 24 bit). The 001 sidetracked me before I bought the 1880. It looks pretty good and much more flexable.

My only fear is getting stuck being an engineer/tech and less time devoted to making music. I see all these posts about editing and power of the software - What ever happen to playing it right? I don't like the idea of manipulating the tracks to make up for a lame performance.

For me the most important aspect of a recording rig is to reproduce my performance as I played it, no noise, no wow and flutter, just me - for better or for worse. It makes more sense to me to be spending time creating more music not mutating last weeks ideas.

With that said I'm leaning back to the 1880. All I ever read on the DUC is people with 001 problems. I don't want problems - I want to make music without distractions.

Yes,

The digi 001 is a good system. I have read reviews, and everybody seems to say how perfect the plugins are and how nice the protools interface is, but thay say that sound quality is good(never excellent).

So to add some spice to this, THe delta 1010s have had reviews of excellent audio quality, and no percievable ick and stuff. but comes with some crappy piece of software and no preamps(which is not anything, because the preamps on the 001 compare to the preamps on a mixer 1202 or 1604), so shop around
