VS-880 - How to get Guitar with Distortion

Hi, Everyone... I have a VS-880 and need to lay down an electric guitar track with distortion during part of the song and chorus during another part. Is there a way to do this straight into the 880? If not, is it safe to record from the amplifier itself? Do amps usually have outputs that aren't "powered"? Would going from the headphone jack work?

I had a VS-880EX and recorded my Cyber-Twin d/i without any problems. The Cyber-Twin has loaded XLR-outputs. I used a patch cord that had XLR male on one end and a 1/4" phone that plugged in the VS-800EX.
