Are any of you folks using the VS-2480CD or the new VS-2400CD hard disk recorders from Roland? I would really appreciate your feedback such as likes, dislikes, are they stable systems, do they contain everything required to complete the process of recording>Mastering>CD, etc., with either of these units. Thanks!

I use a VS-2480CD.

I think it's great. 24 tracks @ 24 bit, the effects are very good (and there's a lot of them - 36 algorithms, 250 preset patches). Editing is good (it has a waveform display, though not a scrolling one), and VGA monitor display is an excellent feature.

The latest software version (2.009) does appear to be very stable.

Yes, it does contain everything required to complete the process, including mastering & burning a CD. Whether you'll want to use it to do all those stages is another matter. It does have a mastering toolkit, with EQ, enhancer, split-band compression & expansion, and limiter. You may want to master your songs using Pro Tools with Waves plugins, or sending it to a Mastering Engineer to get better results, of course.

With the 2480, there is one issue you should be aware of. With all units produced before Jan '03, there is a slight problem with distortion on the preamps, when you use the analog inputs. So, if you get one, you might want to make sure it was manufactured after Jan this year. If not - Roland will fix it, free of charge (though you may have to pay to get it to them).

For more information look at www.vsplanet.com

If you want to know about the preamp distortion issue, do a search on "The Fix" and "Falcon Eddy Crank".

...I have a 2480CD but am still mind-boggled by it...it does soundeth cool to my virgin ears however...

Thanks to both of you for your replies. Moley, thanks for tip about the pre-2003 VS-2480CD model distortion on the analog pres. I am still weighing the decision whether to save up more $$$ for the VS-2480CD or purchase the VS-2400CD. The price differential would appear to be a no brainer but there are subtle advantages with the VS-2480 that may warrant the extra $$$. Decisions, decisions.

Yes, there are differences, which, IMO make it worth getting the 2480-CD. When I got mine, I'm not sure if the 2400 was available - at least when I was looking & deciding, it wasn't - at least the CD version wasn't.

In retrospect, as I could afford it, I'm glad I went for the 2480.

With the 2400, you get fewer channels, and only space for 2 FX cards which is 4 effects (that's an important one - with the 2480 you can have up to 4 cards, which is 8 effects). The 2400 brochure also has no mention of the spectrum analyser, so I assume it doesn't have one.

I guess you have to decide whether the extra features of the 2480 are worth the price difference.

i too am also interested in the comparison of the 2. i work at a music store and get a discount but im not sure if its still worth going for the 2480
