Hi Guys...

I have a VS1680 VXpanded that I purchased in 2000, along with the Roland VS-CDRII for an unholy mount of money (UK, we get raped on everything)

The CDR drive (made by QPS) is really really slow...I think its like 1X if not slower.

1. Can I purchase a faster alternative? I've heard that Plextor makes something that I could get for a reasonable price.

2. My VS 1680 has a 25 pin SCSI - I think its called SCSI DB25. Can I connect this to a newer, faster Plextor CD writer? (I see terms like SCSI 50 pin and 68 pin). What would be the available speed today?

3. I live in the UK - where would I go to get one? Ebay?

4. If there are any updates to the OS for the 1680, how would I install them? I am a guitarist / vocalist and haven't the foggiest idea about MIDI...

Totally confused

Regards

Jay

1. and 2. You can purchase cheaper alternatives - I'm not sure about faster. I know that the 1680 os is the limitation as far as song backup is concerned - the drivers for the CDRW must be part of the os, but, I'm not as certain as for creating playable CDs. For sure, the Plextor 12/4/32 and 12/10/32s external scsi CDRWs work.

3. Really, ebay is the place to get them. The Plextors usually run between $100 and $150 ...

4. There are a couple of options. One involves using a CDRW or Zip drive, etc. Of course, the CDRw is a problem if your os is old and it doesn't recognize the CDRW. Alternatively, you need a soundcard, midi cable to go from the gameport of the pc, a copy of the os, and a pc program called smfplayer, both that can be had from Roland's site. You can use smfplayer to update the os - that is the way that I have done it.

Check out the 1680 sub-forum on the forums at vs planet - there is a wealth of information on this very topic ... so some searches ...

Dear 2001bt

I think you're right. The slow burning is not just the CDR. When the 1680 starts 'converting' it takes forever. Actually I am able to specify a x4 burning speed...

Sorry b2001bt,

Got your name wrong!

Just burned a song to a CD and specified 4X speed. Converting took quite some time, but then it burnt fairly quickly...

You were right...
