Right now, I own a Behringer Ultratwin212 amp. I've always been looking for a better tone, so I bought a Digitech RP2000 pedal, which has served me well. But I just want something now in an all inclusive package, and I was looking at the new vox amps, which looks sweet. My question is, is there any difference in buying the 120 watt combo and adding a 212 cabinet or just getting the 120watt head and a 412 cabinet? Any suggestions on a cheaper cab that would work well with the valvetronix amp? thanks!

With the newer VTX amps, theres not so much of a difference because they're closed back. The older VT amps, like my ad120, are open back, which sound a bit different. For me, having the older VT and an extension 2x12 is the most versatile because I can record an open back or a closed back sound or put them together. I haven't found extension cabs that are stereo, which you need for the VT amps, for any less than you can find the Vox VT cabs for.

If you decide to grab the head and are looking for a cab, check out avatar. I bought my first 412 from them a while back and I still own it. It's been through a lot and still sounds as good as some marshall and boogie cabs. http://www.avatarspeakers.com/ they are fairly unknown, but i'm sure there are others on this board that know what i'm talking about.

I usually go for a separate head and cab whenever I can. It's nice sometimes to sit in the control room w/ the guitar player in there and be recording the cab in an iso room. Also nice to mix and match.

Anyone know what happened to the AC-30 series that Vox was supposed to release? I really don't like the idea of mixing solid state and tubers, I'd rather just have the plain tubes, and that's what this seires is.

The Vox AC 30 exists. It's what the beatles used during 1963 and 64. You can check it out at http://www.voxamps.co.uk/products/ac30/ac30.htm

That's the silliest thing I have read here in some time.

Of course the AC-30 exists. It has for over 40 years!! And plenty of people besides the Beatles have been using them all the time!

I think he was asking about the new AC-30cc amps. They are slated to be shiping in March last I heard. They do look cool, and more than likely I will get one eventually. But I and many other VT owners aren't giving up our VT amps, either. I had a vintage AC-30 and as cool as it was, there are many things tha VT amps do well that an AC30 just can't touch. But this newest AC-30 is different from any other ever made, and has a few features I really like. I will probabyl end up with something like the 1x12 AC30cc, but I'm keeping my AD120 too.

That would be why I was so confused by the question.

man oh man I don't believe I've had any worse experience with an amp than the vox valvetonix. I went though three of the ad120 before giving up. I was impressed with the sound, they did a good job at simulating a number of familar models. The quality control leaves much to be desired. I had three defective ones in a row that I got from guitar center. After the third, enough was enough. Those amps I believe are made in Korea or the like. The quality comes nowhere near an AC-30, hence the mammoth price difference. I went through a couple more amps such as fenders, etc. I finally came to the conclusion that many of these big companies are not what they once were and many of the amps are so mass produced that you really lose out on craftsmanship. I ended up going slightly boutique and bought a rivera a few years back. At least if I have a problem, I know I can call up and speak to a human being, even possibly paul rivera himself. TO me that's worth the extra dough. Oh yeah, by the way, the rivera sounds just as good three years later as the day I brought it home.

You got them at guitar center, that was mistake one. But you played them there and then they broke at home? Or were they broke when you tried them out and you bought them anyways? What was broken on them?

PS Vox amps has a good support system. I have spoken to people with Vox and found them very friendly and helpful.

PPS, the AC-30 has never been known to be a bulletproof amp either. You ever own one? They do tend to be problematic. My AC-30 was VERY much so. But they are known for their tone which you can't get in any other amp.
