To Whom It May Concern:

Might you know what I need "between" my hard drive and my Vox Tonelab amp for recording directly into the computer. The Vox amp has two 1/4" output jacks on the back, which naturally don't plug straight into the computer. Is it a soundcard that I need? Is it an interface? Or are these the same thing? Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely Yours,

John

yes, you need a soundcard (also called an audio interface)

what it does is take the analog signal and convert it to digital, and then back out analog so you can hear it. there are a ton of soundcards on the market. Go to somewhere like musiciansfriend.com or zzounds.com and search for soundcard or audio interface. which ones are good...? you'll have to do research on them. start off by looking at M-Audio products (m-audio.com)...they are geared towards the musician/entry level/intermediate person looking to record. very affordable and well respected among the homerecording world.

good luck.
