how do I get a higher volume from my mixed down songs. The volume is always way lower than what my other cds are.. i have to turn the volume almost to max to get a decent listening level.

If you're using your computer to mix, you can apply a good compression plugin (www.digitalfishphones.com has a great final-mix compressor called Endorphin - it's free) and then just boost the mix to optimal levels.

What frisbee said is a good idea and exactly what I use. But I have a couple more questions. What are you recording on? If it is the MR-8 you need to notice the levels when you are recording and make sure they are up enough. Endorphin works well. If all other levels are good use the endorphin.

......

i also have the same problem...the levels when recording are always high enough but then when its converted to wav and uploaded its always lower. the sound is ok...its not bad to the point where i can't here it but like the other person said its not as loud as other mp3s i have on my computer and it seems like a pain to have to download another program ....is there any other way around it?

You may be having the problem if you're not using a mic preamp. I use a cheap Behringer mixer which is enough preamp to make the levels right where they need to be......fact is, I have to watch real close to be sure the signal is not clipping.

Just got through with a 12hr overtime shift so I am not thinking clearly right now. I think this could be a software thing though that has nothing to do with the MR-8. It is along the lines of the way n-track does when you use it. When you transfer a wav from the MR-8 to the pc into n-track even though on the MR-8 it is way below 0db. When played in n-track it clips. It is the same thing but the other way around. I'll think on this some more after some rest.

And I thought it was just me that had level problems with N-track. There may be a problem with N-track and level setting. I often see it clipping, and yet the sound isn't distorted. I don't think the meters are accurate. This could be something to throw at the guys on the fasoft forum.

I agree w/you guys about the n-track levels thing. I experimented with trying to maximize the levels in Goldwave (the pre-registered version), with limited success.

Since then, however, my boss agreed to spring for the money for Sonic Foundry's Vegas 4.0, since we're editing lotsa video anyway. It's close to $500, but wow, it's cool.
